Week 6 Futures - France F3 ($10k+H) - Bressuire (Hard)

Au contraire, I personally ( and I would guess some others ) find RJA's comment blunt but uncontroversial relating to a guy who reached a CH of WR 248 in August 2009, less than 2 months after his 19th birthday.

I would have no issues with anyone making that general statement as opposed to other more speculative thoughts on a theme that wore a bit thin with quite a few folk.  And let's not return to that theme either, please.

Plus, by the way, Vandenburg, whilst it won't come from me, you haven't exactly given time for any "uproar" re RJA's comment.  You never know  smile

Hope it's nothing serious.  I guess we'll know if he & Ricey pull out of the doubles.

Some better news:

R1:  (Q) Liam Broady WR 978 defeated (8) Rudy Coco (FRA) WR 420 by 6-4 3-6 7-6(3) biggrin

R2:  (WC) Mathias Bourgue (FRA) UNR vs (Q) Liam Broady WR 978

A chance of a QF place for Liam? pray.gif

Edit:  Of relevance in Liam's section of the draw is the fact that the Belgian top seed, Niels Desein (WR 302), lost today to the Czech WC, Jiri Skoloudik (WR 598)... wink Hope I'm not jinxing his chances by looking too far ahead!

You know things are bad when you rely on a 17 year old to save your day

Liam doing well in futures, I wish some of our other juniors would follow suit by focussing on these types of events.

Liam's next opponent is exactly a fortnight younger than him and is the world junior number 15, and the highest ranked 1994 birth.

They do play these type of events. George Morgan nine last year, losing his first match four times, and Oliver Golding played ten, losing his first match six times. I fail to see how moving the balance further towards senior events could possibly have benefitted them. Young male tennis players, unless they are budding superstars, get masses of experience of losing in the first round at 18, 19, and often into their early 20s. There is only so much defeat that people can take, so at 17 it is important for players to learn how to win, as well as how to lose.

I agree if the juniors are losing first rounds every week it would make no sense at all. I just think there is such a big gap between juniors and challenger level on the main tour that low grade futures tournaments are a very good stepping stone between the two. Take George and Olly for example. To me they are not gaining anymore experience at junior level where they should be a class in their one by now. If they must just play the junior slams and no others. I spoke to Olly at Newcastle last year and he said he wouldn't be playing Eddie Herr/ Orange Bowl in 2010 and would be focussing on futures. Six months later he was playing those tournaments and to me as Liam is showing a top junior is very competitive at this level, capable of beating top 500 players. Why not just play more of these types of tournaments.

Great motivation looking at this site! Can't beat it! Sean has been ill over the last few days and has hardly touched a tennis ball but I think he is still going to try and grind out the doubles with Ricey
