Two years ago the team of Luke Bambridge, Evan Hoyt and Christopher Pearce won the under 14 Winter Cup and two thirds of the team (not Luke) is named for the under 16s captained by Greg Rusedski. National under 16 champion Jonny O'Mara is the third player.
Eight teams qualify for the finals, so GBR needs to win its first two matches in Minsk to achieve this. The first against Greece tomorrow should be straightforward, but they are likely to encounter a strong Russian team next.
yep good day for the boys a 3-0 win. chris won his singles in a tough looking match then jonny and Billy won the dubs-belarus tomorow who beat Russia 2-1. Bit of home support against them tomorrow-but they sound in good spirit and of course have the best capt!!
great effort from the u16 boys-jonny saved match points in his game and billy and chris did super to bring it home in the dubs-apparently a very partisan crowd as you would expect-but jonny said he knew he was really up against it when the umpire applauded one of his opponents shots early in the match!!!
well done GB!! The boys finish top of the group with a win against belgium to cap a good week of tennis. Jonny got the team off to a winning start again and Billy just won the second match so its all over! they are all feeling it a bit after a tough few days with jonny needing physio on a sore arm after a 3 hour marathon yesterday, and Chris feeling an ankle so Billy and Jonny are going to team up for the dubs.
Good stuff - the Belgians include the player (Clement Geens) who lost to Peter Ashley in the Eddie Herr final, though he is only listed as playing doubles today. Billy beat Omar Salman, who lost to Peter in the Eddie Herr semis. The finals are in France in a fortnight's time.
chris fought hard but just lost out to a v good player going down in a second set tiebreak.
Jonny and chris on now--they play pretyy well together-I fancy our boys for this if chris can get his big serve going that will give jonny chances to use his excellent touch for some neat volleys and put aways at the net-cmon GB
result!!! 3 and 3 to the good guys!!! jonny reckoned their serves were around mid 80s per cent and both really solid at the net. into the semis v Ukraine. Think Gregs fluent french was handy for "chatting" to the umpire too!!
