RE: Week 3 - Australian Open (Women's Main Draw)

In a novel variation of the "beat a Brit, retire next round" trick that we are so used to seeing in futures, Venus retired after just a few minutes today giving Petko a free ride into R4.

Oh Annie K, it could have been you ...

Nooooo !     I had been thinking yesterday with Venus's problems what if but had forgetten to check what hapened.

280 points for R4 plus 60 points for qualifying would have been 340 points and up to about 70 in the rankings  !

Arguably rather overranked for Anne at the moment but hey you wouldn't bother !

Of course, it couldn't really have been Anne, because we cynics all know that if Anna had beaten Petko, Venus would have miraculously managed to get through the match against Anne then retired in the following round ...

And now, predictably, Shazza is having a serving nightmare against Petko, who is up a set and a break.

Could it be a QF against Bally's bunny Li Na?

Sadly, it looks like Elena will forever remain the last player to be beaten by Justine Henin, who has announced her second retirement today, this time due to the elbow injury she was carrying, so it's very unlikely to be reversed.
