Week 2 - ATP 250 Series - Sydney - Hard

L32: (WC) James Ward WR 201 v Florian Mayer (GER) WR 37

Not the worst possible draw - Dan Cox & the Bogster both managed to take sets off Mayer in 2009.

The winner of this match with play the winner of (6) F-Loppy v (WC) del Potro in R2. I'm sure Wardy would like the chance to finish Feliciano off properly this time, but obviously Mayer v del Potro is the more likely R2 match-up.

How did James get a wildcard here?

Would have to make Mayer big favourite but a loss would mean he can play Aus Open qualies so a decent consolation if that's the case

Expect an Australian to get a wild card into Queen's in exchange for here.

Would like to see more of this, especially at the slams.  It's time the All England Club got with the times and caught up with the rest of the slams on the wild card issue.

They did very briefly. They had a reciprocal agreement with Australia for at least one year if not two. But very short-lived either way.

Tomic got a WC into Queen's last year - I remember hoping at the time (somewhat forlornly) that it might be part of a swap, so with luck Wardy's WC here explains that one.

Apparently James (and Leon Smith) had to share a car to courts with his opponent, Mayer, and Leon was giving it some banter.

"On way to courts- they put my opponent #florian mayer in the car with me and leon....goooood banta from them!!! Muppets"

LOL

The match started and latest long enough for Mayer to win the first game before the rain came.

They got back on court very fast. Wardy held, Mayer held and then broke. cry.gif

1-3*

Very odd serving stats (though it is early days) - 50% 1st serves in for James, 22% of points won when he gets his first serve in (1 ace + 1/8 others), 78% won when he doesn't (all but 1 df & 1/8 others)

James converts his first break point just when he needed to. *4-5

He's being made to work hard for every service game at the moment, but has just held for 3-5* Mayer serving for the set.

And Wardy breaks smile.gif *4-5

Unfortunately, he coildn't hold twice more and went down 5-7. cry.gif

Intriguingly, if GB played Germany in DC (impossible at the moment though it is), these are the two no. 2s so it could be the 5th rubber ...

Despite Wardy having 2 bps in the 2nd set so far, Mayer has now won 5 games in a row cry.gif

Well at least he'll be able to make the AO qualies, with a good warm up under his belt and a nice cheque in his pocket.
