Week 1 - WTA International ($220K) - Auckland, NZ Hard

To my mind that's still a decent win for Heather.  Hey, I'm not looking yet for her to routinely scalp WR 151s, nice as it would be  smile

Looks as if Brianti certainly can have her off days but if she's near her best form it will probably take a very good performance from Heather to get through.

Now FQR wins could be very productive with the qualifiers playing each other in 2 MD 1st round ties.

10 points so far.  But that becomes 16 points for qualifying plus a further 30 points for a 1st round win.

So we now have:

QR2: Heather Watson WR 176 beat Corinna Dentoni (ITA) WR 151 by 5 & 4
QR2: Katie O'Brien WR 179 beat (q4) Junri Namigata (JPN) WR 112 by 5 & 3

FQR: Heather Watson WR 176 v (q1) Alberta Brianti (ITA) WR 91 (CH 67 in Sep 09)
FQR: Katie O'Brien WR 179 v (q6) Kurumi Nara (JPN) WR 130 (CH 101 last Aug) or Noppawan Lertcheewakarn (THA) WR 187 (= CH)

H2Hs for Katie: 0-0 v Nara, 0-1 (6 & 2 in China late last year) v Lertch.

I suspect we can now rule out a Heather/Anne combo for Fed cup.

Interestingly a NZ poster from TF was most impressed by Katie in her first round match and predicted the upset, but I didn't have the confidence to go and predict it. 2011 looks like its going to be a much better year for her.
The same poster was less impressed with Heather but I know from experience she has a tendency to look average when the opposition is struggling.

Not surprised, I thought Katie would end up having to face the young Thai again. Very close scoreline though.

Re Katie. I'd really like to think so Phil.  But I'd like to see a bit more evidence than we have so far before before thinking it's going to be a better, let alone a much better year.

Having said that, Katie is optimistic herself on twitter : "Won today in straight sets. Was considerably better than some of the rubbish I produced last year. I'm so over 2010 already!"

Hope she keeps it up and the rubbish dosen't return.
