Ashes!!

I must admit that I didn't see such a turn, certainly coming within the current test, but it could yet turn again.  Though I couldn't believe so much chicken counting from some England fans I have seen on other forums / media

I do feel that England will really want to restrict the Aussies to at most 250 in their second innings ( well as little as possible ! ), thus giving themselves a maximum target of 332.

That will really take very good disciplined bowling, especially as they will be starting on a day 3 pitch, not yet really condusive to Swann getting the most out of, in fact might be at about its best in the match.  As a fairly new pitch there is some thought that it could later crack and deteriorate a little, but not yet.

Anyway, almost certainly someone is now going to win this match so it coiuld yet be Ashes retention glory for England at the end of the match.  More likely though to go one all.

Yep, too much dross in the papers and I'm not just referring to the English ones. But this collapse doesn't anger me that much as Johnson bowled a few unplayable deliveries and there's not much one can do, honestly. England were just at the wrong place in the wrong time.

They'll just have to relish the challenge like the first test and somehow try to win this. Not likely, but if they could get 500+ for 1 against a similar attack, they can chase 400, too.

The "Hot Topics" bar on the ABC news website (like Twitter's trending topics) says it all:

I think I can safely say that I've never seen a more one sided first day in my life.

Yes, certainly must be one of the most one sided Ashes days ever with bat and ball  smile

I didn't really go with the momentum had really significantly shifted back to the Aussies, but certainly didn't expect such an incredible turn back again to England.

In the last 2 Ashes series there doesn't really seem to have been momentum, more anti momentum.

Looking at these last 2 series and the biggest 3 wins.

2009 Headingley :  Australia win by innings and 80 runs, followed by The Oval : England win by 197 runs

2010 Adelaide :  England win by innings and 71 runs :  followed by Perth : Australia win by 267 runs  :  followed by Melbourne...

Looking at that, maybe England better not beat them by too much here with Sydney following  ( because I want a series win, not just Ashes retention ).

Nah, forget that, thrash them boys !!    smile

More on the momentum thing - before the 2009 Ashes, England had lost to WI (and beat them in the home series, but they were never losing that one) and Australia had won in South Africa, but it didn't matter much. 2005 saw a good deal of momentum swings and there was a little bit of it in 2006-07 as well, but England just didn't have the team *.

* I was seeing the scorecard of Melbourne 2006 and England had a lower order of Read, Mahmood, Harmy, Panesar and Hoggy. That's pure comedy.

Hey ho.  346 runs ahead, 5 first innings wickets left and a whinging Aussie captain.

I suggest Ricky doesn't read the local morning newspapers  smile

Great drama today and I loved every moment of it. Siddle was such a hero today, wasn't he? Reminds me of what Flintoff would do to the crowds.

I am worried that Colly will be dropped if England retain the Ashes. While he does look bad, I believe he can still offer a lot to the team - people shouldn't forget what he did last year. So come on, Colly, don't play in the IPL and get in some county runs before next season.

See what I did to Bresnan with the anti jinxing earlier in this thread? I must admit that I was totally wrong about him.

Can't believe that he was reversing it like that!

imagine if a storm suddennly appeared in melbourne.....

so england for the next test series have a massive bowling dilema with who to play, i think finn will be firmly 12th man now, and who is to say that broad is autmatic selection when fit, espec after tremlett and bresnan performances.

My betting on the starting pace attack for the next series, all being ft, would be Anderson, Broad and Tremlett.

Tremlett has certainly produced and Bresnan too has pleasantly surprised me. I knew Bresnan could probably be reled on to be steady which he has been but his pace and swing has been really good.  I think Broad will still be an initial first pick but there is enough back-up to hopefully keep Broad and indeed all the first choice on their toes.

The one place Panesar might have played as a second spinner was Sydney but it ain't going to happen with England ( presumably ) one up and not wishing to weaken the batting order.  It will be same again there I am sure though Collingwood can count himself lucky that there isn't a stronger batting candidate than Morgan waiting in the wings.

The next test after Sydney is Sri Lanka at Sophia Gardens in May. That early in the season, you'd fancy swing over seam so I don't think Tremlett is the ideal choice. Maybe later in the summer though.

I dont see morgan as a long term test replacement for collingwood, i think hildreth of somerset is knocking on the door
as for penasar england would not even play 2 spinners in india i dont think, they are so negative

thought i think adil rashid got such a raw deal, he took 50 wickets in the chapionship and averaged 40 with the bat, but yet somehow tredwell and monty are ahead of him in the spin pick?
