Middelkoop a set up against Priddle Iannuzzi a set up against El Menshawy
Josh's miserable year continues unabated. According to his Twitter account he is playing futures for the next 5 weeks. Desperately needs some decent results if he is to salvage anything from this year.
Just waiting for one result but we will have 8 brits in round 2
Matthew EBDEN (AUS) (1) Vs Daniel COX (GBR) Alexander SLABINSKY (GBR) Vs Miloslav MECIR (SVK) (6) Matwe MIDDELKOOP (NED) (4) Vs Enrico IANNUZZI (ITA) Toby MARTIN (GBR) Vs Timo NIEMINEN (FIN) (5) Daniel EVANS (GBR) (8) Vs Tom FARQUHARSON (GBR) Daniel COCHRANE (GBR) Vs Joshua MILTON (GBR) Thomas FABBIANO (ITA) (7) Vs Miles BUGBY (GBR) Antal VAN DER DUIM (NED) Vs Scott GRIEKSPOOR (NED) or Matteo VIOLA (ITA) (2)
Josh Goodall looked in better shape than a year ago and I quite fancied him to win today. Fabbiano was just that little bit better on the day, particularly on returns. Josh can hit some blistering shots, but they were returned with interest today, leaving him very frustrated. Depite that I think he will do well in the run of futures he has entered.
Josh Milton's match with Galvani was very strange. Milton was 0-3 down in the first set but fought hard to level and take it into a tie break which he narrowly won. Galvani seemed to switch off after that and at 4-1 to Josh with only one break of serve, he went completely walkabout. He had several short conversations with his fellow Italian players, did not concentrate at all during the 6th game and promptly retired with the score at 1-5 and Milton to serve for the match. There may be a reason but strange behaviour indeed!
Fast courts favour tall players and so Feaver lost to Bugby and Cox really struggled against Garanganga. The Zimbabwe player looked a decent player and it was anybody's match until Garanganga dropped serve at 4-5 in the third. Toby Martin worked very well for his victory over the unranked qualifier Vilardo and justified his WC.
The other matches went as expected.Of the 8 Brits through only 2, Evans and Milton, are favourites to procede (and as they both play home opposition 2 Brits certainly will). And one will get to the semis for sure. Good luck to Cox v Ebden, Slaba v Mecir, Martin v Middlekop, and Bugby v Fabbiano, but I fear they will need it!
Hard to see Cox winning today. Has amazed me with his recent excellent form which I hope he can keep up, but if he can only beat the desperately poor Garanganga in 3 sets then something's not quite working. How Garanganga maintains his semi respectable ranking is a mysery - he's easily the worst player with a top 1,000 ranking that I've ever seen.
