Boys & Girls: Osaka Mayor's Cup, Japan - Grade A (Week 42)

4 GB girls on the entry list for this extremely weak Grade A event. Pippa makes #39 on the entry list without ever playing an event stronger than Grade 4. If she can maintain her form of beating three girls circa 100 in the rankings at the British Nationals,  there are only 4 top 50 players here and the last place in the main draw goes to a girl ranked 1279, so a good chance to get some decent ranking points for all 4:

13 Lucy Brown
20 Francesca Stephenson
29 Katy Dunne
39 Pippa Horn

The qualifying field has weakened even further, and now only has match 15 wins this year among the 32 players.

The boys event also only manages 4 top 50 players but is a bit stronger further down the field with the last main draw entrant being ranked 461. 2 GB entrants:

18 Robert Carter
26 Kyle Edmund

James Ireland was 11th in qualifying on the entry list but isn't present in the draw.

RE: Boys & Girls - Osaka Mayor's Cup - Grade A, Japan

Pippa has gone awol, and other three girls have draws a tougher than they could have been (even Lucy)

DUNNE, Katy (GBR) WR 210 vs KITAGAWA, Rio (JPN) 14 WR 103
STEPHENSON, Francesca (GBR) WR 149 vs HIBINO, Nao (JPN) WR 196
BROWN, Lucy (GBR) 13 WR 93 vs NOI, Yukako (JPN) WR 535

Boys have a similar level of difficulty. If he wins, Kyle should face the #2 seed in round 2, WC UCHIYAMA, Yasutaka (JPN) WR 22

CARTER, Robert (GBR) WR 147 vs JOHANSSON, Morgan (SWE) WR 225
EDMUND, Kyle (GBR) WR 184 vs METREVELI, Aleksandre (GEO) WR 159

Metreveli reached 4 consecutive finals earlier in the year, but has played little recently so hopefully Kyle can take advantage. Kitagawa beat one of the Pliskova sisters recently, so Katy is up against it.

Kyle's victim looks to be the grandson of the 1973 Wimbledon runner-up with the same name - it doesn't say who his father is in his ITF profile but his coach is Irakli Metreveli, the name of one of the old master's sons - see http://www.metreveli-academy.com/en/biography/

Oh dear  cry   Was looking forward to watching her progress after her performances at the British Nationals under 18s.

Sadly Pippa is one of the most injury prone tennis players I've come across.

Kyle and Robert teamed up to win their doubles opener comfortably, as did Katy and partner, but the seeded partnership of Lucy and Fran lost. Round 2 singles tomorrow

I think that sort of injury has to be down to bad luck rather than being 'prone'. Hope she isn't out for long.

Good news for Katy in doubles. She's equalled her best points haul (a G4 win) with that first round win but faces 5th seeds next.

edmund really seems to have stepped up a gear recently, steamrolling through matches, i have a funny feeling about tomorow, we shall see. atm he is certainly ahead of bambridge in my book. also delighted with the success evan has had last few weeks, exciting times for these three

Robert defended his points from last year, and is joined in round 3 by Lucy, but it would require a major shock for either to progress further, given they are up against top 20 players.

Boys R2

Robert Carter (GBR) d. Kaichi Uchida (JPN) 6-3 4-6 6-4
(2/WC) Yasutaka Uchiyama (JPN) d. Kyle Edmund (GBR) 6-4 6-1

R3

(1) Mate Pavic (CRO) v Robert Carter (GBR)

Girls R2

(13) Lucy Brown (GBR) d. Megane Bianco (SUI) 7-6(5) 6-3

R3

(13) Lucy Brown (GBR) v (2) Saisai Zheng (CHN)
