RE: Week 41 - WTA ($220K) - Linz, Austria Hard

And Anne wins 7-4 in the tie break! I have to say I was worried when she didn't serve it out at 5-4. Great win-is that her best win of the year?

I'm so pleased for Anne, that is a big win against a woman very much in form this year. hopefully this will convince Anne that she can still compete at the top of the game.

It feels like a bit of a turning point type match.

*keels over* Wow Jarmila Groth's perfect 10-0 record against Brits since she first met one (Bally in 2004) finally over biggrin ... and from a set down too.

Oh I love a good Aussie-bash! biggrin

Great effort from Anne, eventhough Groth has gone off the boil following her maiden win on the tour.

Well done Anne, that's a great looking result   smile     Must admit I certainly didn't see that coming, Groth has been in very good form and Anne err hasn't.

It is the highest ranked opponent she has beaten this year if you exclude Suarez Navarro who was WR 40 when Anne beat her  5 -  6 RET in Morocco in April.   Actually it seems almost from about then, that after a pretty encouraging comeback start to the year Anne's form seemed to go off.  I remember seeing that Suarez Navarro injury at the time and it looked pretty bad.  Rather surprisngly she was back one month later for one match at the French Open, although then not again until the US Open.

It would be great if this does represent an upturn again, although I do note that during the third set markymc1983 described it as a "pretty ugly match" so for anyone that saw the stream, was there a fair element that Groth seemed really off - form ?  How was Anne looking ?

I only saw the final set and it wasn't pretty. I thought Groth played awfully, by far the worst I've seen her play. hitting the net and hitting long about twice per game. Anne was irritated by quite a lot of the line calls and was very week whilst serving for the match at 5-4. Anne did handle the tie break well though, I was worried that she might bottle it. Still, a win is a win and I bet it will give her confidence a massive boost.

Hope so, although I would think she really needs to feel good form too.  Clearly Anne would have been really wanting to collect good points in these months where she has nothing to defend.

Though still has a "16th best" of 18 points, so it's a 70 here ( for a 2nd round win) that would start being really useful.   That would mean winning another pretty tough looking match against Petkovic or Kerber of Germany.  Petkovic has won the first set.

L16: Anne Keothavong WR 147 v (6) Andrea Petkovic (GER) WR 35

Anne has actually beaten the crazy German once before, 2 & 5 in Glasgow way back in 2006.

Excellent morale-booster for Anne. It's always difficult for players after long-term injuries (especially those in the middle or later stages of their career) but hopefully winning a tight match against a top 50 player will help her fragile belief that she can regain the level and ranking of 18 months ago.

Sarah has been given another day to recover from India before her doubles

Petkovic will be much tougher because she is in better form.

When I went out this afternoon Anne had just lost the 1st set and it was 1-1 in the 2nd - things were not looking good.

Just came in and checked 'todays results'.

So thrilled for her - really brilliant  smilesmilesmilesmilesmile

Struggling to see 15 other scores better than her 16th best of 18 points for Anne this year. I know Steven's table says 18 is her 16th best, but by my reckoning it's only 5.

Edit: I guess it's to do with her mandatory events?

In terms of pure ranking points you are right, SMC, 5 points is Anne's 16th best.  But she can't drop any of her 6 mandatory counters.

Her 18 point score is the lowest non mandatory score that she can replace, so that's the score both Steven and I are using the term "16th best" for, really meaning "lowest that can be replaced".

See stats with mandatories shown with an "M"  :

Just when I thought I'd got the hang on the ranking points system...
