Week 38 - ITF ($25K) - Alice Springs, Australia Hard

L32: (7) Mel South WR 263 beat Azra Hadzic (AUS) UNR by 4 & 2 smile.gif
L32: (Q) Eleanor Dean UNR lost to Marija Mirkovic (AUS) WR 363 by 6-7(3) 6-2 6-2 cry.gif

Not bad for an unranked 14-y-o against a top 400 players!

L16: (7) Mel South WR 263 v (WC) Karen Filippou (AUS) WR 769

Filippou has only faced a Brit once before, losing in 3 sets to Maddie Brooks (CH 875 in Sep 2007, last played in Oct 2007) in Melbourne 25K qualifying in Feb 2007, but I assume she has improved a fair bit since then!

... and will next play Daniella Dominikovic, who is unranked after being out (injured?) between March 2009 and September 2010 but had a CH of 324 in 2005 and has been impressive so far this week.

Seems like it's Mel's turn to fly the flag again in AUS this week - Naomi has been beaten by the Belgrade-born girl who lost to Mel in Cairns:

L16: (7) Mel South WR 263 beat (WC) Karen Filippou (AUS) WR 769 by 2 & 0 smile.gif
L16: (2) Naomi Cavaday WR 213 lost to Bojana Bobusic (AUS) WR 377 by 4 & 1 bleh

QF: (7) Mel South WR 263 v Daniella Dominikovic (AUS) UNR

QF: (7) Mel South WR 263 beat Daniella Dominikovic (AUS) UNR by 6-3 5-7 6-1 smile.gif

SF: (7) Mel South WR 263 v (1/Q) Sacha Jones (NZL) WR 184 or Pemra Ozgen (TUR) WR 416

Jones is still only 19 and has beaten EWS and Danielle Brown in the last 12 months, both 3 & 2. A year early she beat Naomi B 2 & 4 in Port Pirie before going out to Emily and she also beat Anna Smith in 2007 but lost to Anna Fitz in 2008. If you can draw any conclusions from all that, you;re way ahead of me! smile.gif

Ozgen lost to Cav last week and Mel has a 2-0 H2H against her - Antalya 2004 in 3 sets and Vigo 2007 1 & 2.

Close ...

This means that over the first three weeks of their trip down under:

- Mel has reached SF/QF/SF, picking up 62 points (over 30% of her current total) c.f. 30 for a Shrewsbury QF in the same period last year

- Cav has reached R2/Final/R2, picking up 50 points c.f. 22 (14 for Shrewsbury R2 and 8 for Helsinki R2) in the same period last year

They now have a one week break before the Port Pirie 25K, where the only player above them on the entry list is Arina Rodionova.

Overall then, it seems to have been a good idea to go to Australia, though Naomi must be a bit disappointed that she only had one good week.

Naomi must be jealous of some of Mel's draws, i mean Mel this week beat one ranked player (769) and got a SF!
