James wasn't the only player to benefit from his opponent's retirement in the first round: Young-Jun Kim (KOR) & Matthew Ebden (AUS/5) also bit the dust, as it were! Ebden is James's doubles partner & they should have played their first-round match agin none other than Bogomolov & Denis Gremelmayr (GER) today. I feared the worst until I checked the draw sheet: no obvious sign of a walkover, so I guess the weather finally intervened. They're now scheduled to play tomorrow instead, assuming Ebden's recovered.
'Twill be a busy day for James, as he also has to play his second-round singles match &, if he & Ebden, get past Bogo & Gremelmayr, their second-round doubles match against the third seeds, Chris & Josh, who had a reasonably comfortable 3 & 5 win over Nielsen & Sugita today.
Ebden did recover & they beat Bogomolov & Gremelmayr by 6-3 7-6(3), so
QF: Matthew Ebden (AUS) & James Ward vs (3) Chris Eaton & Josh Goodall,
that match presumably to be played tomorrow. On the face of it, the bottom half of the draw has opened up a bit, as Yuki Bhambri & our old friend, Ryler Deheart, (IND/USA) took out the Russian second seeds, Kirillov & Kudryavtsev, by 6-2 6-6 retired (the retirements continue... ) today.
Taylor Dent does this in challengers quite a lot, he can lose to anybody with a pulse some days.
That sounds like you've lost a fair bit of cash by betting on him!
Only the once, Jesse Witten bt Taylor Dent 7-6(1) 7-6 (2) Talahassee 2009. Painful. How a guy with his serve can lose tie breaks like that I am not quite sure. Witten was losing to guys 500/600 in the world at that point and I only needed Taylor to win for a payout of about £500.
Singles match 2nd on court - think around 7am UK time (play begins 11am local) Doubles match after suitable rest Potential 2nd doubles match immediately after
I hope James is ok here and we're just seeing Rieschick's 15 match winning streak form asserting itself (hopefully temporarily) - Wardy seemed to be well on top at the start.

Hmm, don't worry Wardy, this isn't your one and only chance at overtaking Boggo - you haven't got any more points to defend this year and he's got loads - relax!
