After Wimbledon Liam Broady said that he would probably miss the US Open to develop his game on clay. True to his word, after tackling Futures events in Belgium he is top seed in the first of a group of Grade 1/2 European events this month.

Jessica Ren is seeded in the girls event, but Fran Stephenson was a late withdrawal

A shock defeat for Liam against someone he beat easily earlier in the year but better news from the girls, though tough matches await in the quarters - Jess's opponent won a Grade 1 over the summer. Jess has also reached the doubles semis

Girls R2

(6) Jessica Ren (GBR) d. Yana Erkeeva (RUS) 6-4 7-5

QF

(4) Daria Salnikova (RUS) v (6) Jessica Ren (GBR)
Natalie Beazant (GBR) v (3) Natalija Kostic (SRB)

Narrow defeat for Natalie. I notice she hasn't played any senior events yet, is she planning on going straight down the US College route or is she just still fine tuning her game in the juniors before trying out seniors?

The latest article I can find ( http://www.theboltonnews.co.uk/news/northwest/8246525.Wimbledon_ace/ ) doesn't answer your question directly, but the enigmatic comment "I'm playing mainly ITFs, to get my ranking up so I can play all the junior slams, and then who knows from there" suggests no final decision has been made.

Natalie's progress is very gradual, and not yet sufficient to give optimism of a career in the upper echelons of the women's game, so given the amount of time she has spent in the US the College route seems a likely choice.

Thanks for the info about Natalie. As you have said her results so far wouldn't necessarily mark her out as a future top 20 player, but without knowing more about her game/ mentality I guess its difficult to know how she would theoretically fare in the seniors.

I have kept an eye on her results for the past couple of years as I was pleased to see a British girl who prefers to play on clay (the only other play I can think of the moment who loves the dirt is Amanda Carreras). For the past year I have kept on expecting her name to appear in qualifying for 10Ks on clay, and have been surprised by her absence from senior events as girls with lower junior rankings and of a similar age have been dabbling with seniors for a while (Borthwick, Gabb etc).

I'm sure Natalie and her coach Tiffany Dabek (a former top 150 player I believe) know what their doing, and I wish her the best of luck with whatever route she decides to take.

Err yes, I wouldn't necessarily have Danieka marked out as a future top 20 player  disbelief.gif

All the best to her, but at the moment she needs to advance a lot if she is ever going to be a top 200 player.
