Have to say that I almost expected Ward to win this one and very pleased that he did so. Goes to show how far he has come that I was pretty sure he would beat a top 150 clay court specialist. His section of the draw has opened up nicely as well as he is now the highest ranked player in the quarter as Oscar Hernandez, the 6th seed, was also beaten today
In truth James would have been better off playing Hernandez as he has been playing awfully these last few months. Great win though, Ventura has lost a few recently, but was still dangerous.
An excellent win for James. We should remember that Santiago will have travelled back from NY over the weekend and may not have super fresh or re-acquainted with the dirt. However, James took his opportunity when it came, unlike most Brits. I hope he backs it up with more un-British behaviour by not losing to a much lower ranked player in the next round.
I think he moves back to hard courts after this tournament, right?
Good stuff Wardy. Seems to be making some real progress at last but does need to back it up against the lower opponents and bag more points. He's capable of a much higher ranking. Just needs more consistancy. Is he still being helped by Rusedski?
James ranking should certainly be moving up the rest of the year simply with any points he gains, since he has no points to defend and many zero slots in his "best 18".
Based on his form over the last few months, I would think he has a real chance of cracking the top 200 by the end of the year.

he needs to get about 100 points, (inc covering the 21 he's defending) so its certianly doable as he'll have 8 slots to fill. but again i think he'll need one really good week and reach a final, obviously a series of SF's etc would be great too, QF's just seem worth so little now :(

James could well be top 200 by the end of September. If he can win today and one further round (as mentioned by BiB, he is the highest ranked player in his quarter), plus 5 wins during the next 2 challengers in Bangkok (both $35,000 events), he'll have around 250 points which should be enough for T200
Edit: I started typing this about 15 minutes ago, but sent it just a minute ago, so this wasn't really in response to your post Count, more an expansion on Indy's.

James is currently inside the top 200 in the ATP race at 196 with his 183 points so far this year. I found a website which shows the race which is: http://tennislive.free.fr/race. It is updated continuously although doesn't include James' Futures win last week which will be added on after Monday's rankings are released I would imagine
