There's a fantastic match in progress between Mattek-Sands (who has to be the American equivalent of Bally) and Petkovic. Mattek-Sands had at least 2 match points in her last service game, but now needs to hold to force a third set tie-break.
Sadly, Radwanska played rubbish most of the time from then on. It was quite intense to follow because Eleanor Preston was watching with Bally in NY and they were both desperate for updates (DM from Eleanor "Yes please. Sitting with Miss B and we're cheering ARad!" LOL), clearly well aware of the rankings implications.
Elena is now virtual world no. 49 after Schnyder overtook on Thursday. Quite a few potential threats went out on Thursday, as SMC mentioned above, but Peng will overtake if she beats Petkovic on Saturday.
However, even if she does, someone else would need to overtake to deny Elena a top 50 place. The other players who still can overtake by the end of the USO are:
- Chan (who beat Anne), who would need to beat (1) Wozniacki and then win an R4 match too - Dominguez Lino (who beat Heather), Razzano and Minella, all of whom would need to reach the SFs - Capra, who would need to reach the Final - 9 players in the virtual 50-59 range who would need to sneak a late WC into the Biella 100K next week and win various numbers of matches there - see http://www.freewebs.com/britishtennis/gbtop25f/ebrnkuso.htm
It seems very unlikely that more than one of these things could happen, so if Petkovic can take out Peng on Saturday, Elena should be able to breathe more easily and she might even be ok for a top 50 place even if Peng goes further.

Steven, I'm sure you can confirm, but it looks like Bally will be overtaking Oudin too. She was ranked 41st with 1272 points. However, she has 500 coming off from last years USO, but only reached R2 this year.
