I'll put my neck on the block and say there's a zero chance Laura will play today, but still confident there'll be play from 3 o'clock local time onwards. Frustrating for players waiting around. Forecast for the remainder of the week and for the first week of the tournament is for it to stay dry and sunny and get increasingly warmer with temperatures up to 30C by next week, heres hoping.
The question is will they expect players to backup and play twice in a day or will they just extend qualifying into Saturday when the weather is certain to be good ?

Laura: "Was supposed to be on 5th, match is now cancelled. Back to watching How I Met Your Mother. Exciting day!"
I'm pretty sure they've extended qualifying to Saturday in the past, possibly even Sunday, I remember it being annoyingly late from a BOTB point of view one year.

They have definitely extended the US Open qualifying through Saturday on more than one occasion (irritating as like last time they extended I'm off on Saturday morning for a short break so will have to enter the BOTB before qualifiers are placed)
Here's the LTA article about Katie's win with quotes and a photo of her serving with a very high ball toss
In regular events they don't generally have spare days so players are expected to play twice in a day to catch up. In grand slams and especially with the weekend to fall back on surely they wouldn't expect players to play twice. Makes sense to complete the first round tomorrow and then play the second round on Friday and FQR on Saturday when dry weather is guaranteed.
Looking better: http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/east/eaus/avn-l.jpg. And lest anyone worry about play for early next week, the hurricane that you can see in the bottom right isn't supposed to come near enough the coast to be a problem There is, however, another potential hurricane, whose path in the North Atlantic can't yet be predicted, behind it. -- Edited by Spectator on Wednesday 25th of August 2010 07:58:23 PM

If the tail end of last years US Open juniors is anything to judge by, having matches messed around doesnt seem to affect Heather too badly! That said, it could be more to do with it affecting her opponents.
