Katie has a 0-2 H2H against Savchuk, but both matches were very close.
Last two years we should have had a qualifier but Bally and Laura suffered an injury and a panic attack respectively when they were well ahead in the third set of their final FQR match. Hopefully Katie or Laura can do it this year.
Can't remember having a women's qualifer here since I've been following tennis. Last time men's or women's was Josh (2006?)
Katie started by serving to love and finished by breaking to 15 ( as above 60% return points won ). Little wobble near the end of the first set but got the job done in the tiebreak and sailed through the second set. Serve stats in isolation perhaps don't look too good, but of course rarely great for Katie. BP conversion rate impressive.
I did, like some others, think she had the best draw of the Brits. It is very encouraging that she has come through so far, and a real possibility of qualifying here which would be a good acheivement ( and as said pretty rare for a Brit ) in a season that has certainly not always gone as she would wish.

Nice to see that the big if has been dealt with - and emphatically. Laura is still a mystery though, and I do worry that without the big scalp up for grabs she may get tense again. Nevertheless after making the FQR last year anything less than the same would be disappointing and the draw has opened up nicely. I suppose a spot in the MD of a slam trumps the need for a scalp anyway so Ill be eagerly hoping she gets there.
Great to see Katie take steps towards redeeming her dissapointing season. To beat a talented youngster in straights with bakery products to boot is nice, especially considering she hadnt dropped a game going into the match and must therefore have been somewhat confident. Savchuk has been awful all year, with multiple losing streaks that are pretty poor. Hope Katie can snatch the win and start becoming a more regular in the MD of the big events.
Observations from yesterday and predictions for today:
First of all my prediction of three losses worked a treat so of course I would be shocked if either Laura or Katie win a set today.
Difficult to evaluate Laura's performance from yesterday. By all accounts Dokic was very poor and if you subtract the net ace/double fault points from both players points yesterday the total points won by each player was very similar. One certainty though is that Laura produced easily her best service performance to date on a hard court 11 aces/ 4 double faults. This is also backed up by eye witness accounts from TF who said her service placement was impressive. It also appears that she was mentally pumped for this match something which Laura can struggle with at times.
Her match today IMO is 50/50 as Manasieva is a very consistent top 100-150 player, only outclassed when moving up a grade. She qualified last year and according to reports was impressive yesterday. Laura therefore will need to play at least as well as yesterday to get the win.
Cav just very disappointing nothing else to add. I have discussed Cav's pitfalls on numerous occasions before and I don't think I need to repeat myself again now.
KOB produced the performance of the day for me taking out arguably the best player in her section with a bit of comfort.
I was quite confident Katie could qualify until I saw the H2H against Savchuk. The last encounter being played when Katie was in the form of her life, but the win is still possible but I would have to make Savchuk the favourite.

The last British woman to qualify for the US Open was Sam Smith, who beat (15) Sylvia Plischke (AUT) to qualify in 1997, when she was seeded 4.
Since then, there have been 8 FQR matches involving Brits and they have lost them all. The numbers going out in each round since 1997 and the Brits who made it to the FQR were as follows:
