Well, Andy's staggered into the quarters courtesy of two unconvincing three-set wins agin Chardy & Gulbis. The head-to-head with the Mardy One stands at 3-3, Fish having won the last two encounters, the more recent one at Queen's, where Andy was the defending champion, in three sets in June. The earlier Fish win occurred when Andy was really suffering after his defeat by Rog in the final of the AO: 4 & 4 at the Miami Masters in March. Question is, how much does he want it this time? How much is he already looking ahead to the USO? Is Fish going to be playing him at yet another fortuitous moment? Much as I'd like to see him defend his losing semi-finalist points from last year, I fear this QF is going to be a bridge too far...
$64,000 question to the ATP: why are these North American Masters Series events bunched so tightly together in advance of the USO? The players barely have a chance to draw breath after one before there's another under way!!! Are TPTB trying to ensure that the spoils are spread more "equitably" by making it well-nigh impossible for just one of the best players to dominate & pick ALL the plums?
Good question. Why can't Canada say be a week earlier ??? Successive weeks and then one week gap to the US Open is just silly.
Anyway, I'd guess at least Andy will have more success on return against Fish than Dammit who won 8 / 48 points and didn't take Fish to deuce once on return.
I'm kinda not too bothered about the result, just please let it not be a 3 set toilier.
I'm sure one of the commentators said last week that the players had actually requested a change to the calendar and for the tournaments to be grouped together like this.
Oh had Andy been droppoing hints about his early schedule in the sun here, following on from no night matches at Toronto ? I'd been guessing it wasn't his choice !
I kind of saw how Toronto was playing out, allowing for the previous day's night match and keeping prospective later oppponents playing about the same time left Andy looking likely to be earlyish each day.
Here, with prospective later opponents ( Muzza and Roddick ) playing at either ends of the day, they could really have gone either way and I would have thought more logically had their quarters the later ones. I get the impression a prospective Nadal / Fed semi is at this stage looked on as being the later semi. For there was to me, with Roger's day off and Nadal playing late in the afternoon but not the night match, every opportunity to have Roger and Rafa as first on followed by Djokovic vs Andy Roddick with Muzza playing the night match ( he's playing an American too so presumably not unattractive ).
Instead the first 2 matches today are Andy ( yet again ) and Roddick ( following his night match ) with Roger and Rafa ( today's night match ) to follow.
I'd put a guess which is going to be first semi on Saturday Maybe Andy will be out of here and not involved.
Another thing with these early matches is that the attendances have been shockingly bad. I think that playing in front a mostly empty stadium just adds to Andy's lack of motivation for early round matches.
Hopefully there will be a few more people there today since he is playing a Yank.
Interesting look at the logic . . . good to see someone is thinking these things through! I think that today part of the situation is also his opponent: because he's still in the doubles, Fish has to play twice. That probably made an early start on the singles more likely . . . .

Ah, that I suppose has some logic to having Fish on first. So I must dismiss that, I prefer conspiracy !!
