Week 33 - Challenger ($35,000+H) - Salvador, Brazil (Hard)

R32: Jamie Baker WR 249 v Giovanni Lapentti (ECU) WR 231

Not a bad draw for Jamie. The two met only a couple of weeks ago in the R16 of Campos Do Jordao where Lapentti won through 6-4, 7-6(4) so hopefully time for revenge here for our man!

Not the worst of draws but not the best either.

Thing is that Jamie is quite good at winning L32 Challenger matches but far from as good at winning L16s ( it's been a long time ! ) and that doesn't always seem related to the ranking of the player hmm.gif

According to Live Score, James won 7-6, 6-3

Very good win if this is true against a tough opponent.

A revenge victory too. Lapentti beat Jamie in straight sets two weeks ago so a very good turnaround.

MTF also states the same result so very good news indeed, now a chance to try and win a R16 match at a Challenger. As Indiana states it has been a while for Jamie, dating back to the Knoxville Challenger in November 2007! That means an 11 match losing streak in R16 Challenger matches, 6 of which have come this year. Of course some of that has to do with Jamie's horrible illness sustained shortly after that SF run at Knoxville but it would be nice to break that run, especially with a lot of points to defend from his excellent Futures run last Autumn

Sorensen took out the 2nd seed, but it was Del Bonis whom I believe Jamie beat last week. Sorensen had a great start to the year but his form has been mainly patchy since so I'm predicting Jamies wins another round pray.gif

Jamie's match with Sorensen evidently never started.

On OoP to start at 10 am local time Thursday on "Practice Court 2".  If he wins that he is due to play his QF against Udazmir Ignatik ( BLR ) or Ricardo Hocevar ( BRA ) later on with also a doubles match scheduled even later  hmm.gif

They should be playing now. The tournament is updating scores on twitter but the updates don't seem to cover the matches being played on the 'practice courts' though I've tweeted them just in case the lack of updates on those matches is because they think nobody is interested in them!

Btw the H2H is 1-0 to Jamie, a comprehensive 3&1 win in Portugal (they seem to only meet in Lusophone countries!) but it was way back in 2005.
