Boys: National Championships (U18), Roehampton (Week 32)

Qualifying has finished for the Nationals, taking place at the National Tennis Centre. With Oliver Golding heading for the Youth Olympics in Singapore George Morgan is top seed, scheduled to meet sometimes doubles partner Lewis Burton in the quarters, if matches go according to seeding. Second seed Ashley Hewitt could meet Luke Bambridge at the same stage, the latter having been given a wildcard.

Possibly -
"TOURNAMENT STRUCTURE AND MATCH FORMATS
22. In the 18&U boys singles main draw semi-finals and final, the LTA and Tournament Referee reserve the right to alter the format to be the best of 5 tie-break sets."

I guess the vagueness is so that they are not committed to 5 sets in the event that bad weather intervenes, causing a backlog, or is likely to disrupt the final

Massive shock straight away as George Morgan loses to Eamon Soulsby in the first round.

Wow that is massive, I would have thought george would be playing dubs in the olympics anyway

If there is still a chance of him going to Singapore that might explain the surprising lack of fight judging by the scoreline. He is in the doubles draw here though with Lewis. All the other seeds progressed, but Lewis was taken to 3 sets and Luke survived a long tiebreak against Dan Cochrane

As I had said a when the entry list was out at first, he was only one out, any withdrawal and he's in, and I'm not sure but i assume he could play dubs

. 'Unlike the regular Olympic Games, players can partner someone from another country in the doubles. World ranking points are also available, with the YOG Tennis Event a Grade A event on the 2010 ITF Junior Circuit.'

from the itf website, so george would need a withdrawal to play dubs

The only upset on seeding in the quarter-finals was Richard Gabb beating an injured Tom Allen (who subsequently withdrew from the doubles), though I think Richard would have been regarded as favourite on hard courts. Ashley comfortably dealt with Luke 6-3 6-3

SF

(6) Lewis Burton v (3) Jack Carpenter
(5) Richard Gabb v (2) Ashley Hewitt

Doubles Final

(1) Burton/Morgan v (2) Gabb/Hewitt

Amazing scoreline, if I'm hearing the umpire correctly on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQroV_d6qw8&feature=channel, though Burton was saying in his interview yesterday that he was injured and not moving well, so that may have been a factor.
