Week 31 - WTA International $220k - Copenhagen, Denmark - Hard

Bally and Anne (with her SR) will be in the main draw here:

QR1: Johanna Konta WR 304 v (wc) Mai Grage (DEN) UNR
QR1: Heather Watson WR 262 v (q8) Eleni Daniilidou (GRE) WR 180

Katie, Cav and Anna Smith were all down to play qualifying here, but Katie is still in Vigo, the fact that Anna's QF was 'delayed' by a day means she couldn't get here and who knows what's happened to Naomi.

Jo is in the section with (5) Wörle and (1) Chakvetadze as seeds and the other seed in Heather's section is (2) Grönefeld.

JoKo plays 6th on Centre whilst Heather is 7th on court 1, so probably early evening matches. The Greek girl used to be a very powerful ball-striker, but has suffered badly with injury for a long time, and has lost far more matches than she has won this year (including bakery products against Anne K at Midland). The Danish wildcard was well beaten by Tara this week, so is a good draw for JoKo on her return from injury.

Anna clearly thinks playing doubles is nearly as important as singles as you would have thought she could have signed in by phone and nipped over to Denmark in time for tomorrow.
As for Cav anyones guess as she hasn't played alot recently but I don't think is injured. She has been much quieter on twitter of late than she used to be, so no help there. She did participate in a five mile run with Heather earlier in the week however.
Heather's draw is tricky although Groenefeld assuming she gets to meet her is seriously out of form having returned from a nasty injury.
JoKo has a great draw to get to the FQR and then a nearly impossible task against a resurgent Chakvetadze.

First thought was that this might be why her QR1 match is n/b 18.00 CET (though it would still have been odd that she was included in the draw) and that the dubs Final in Istanbul was going to be played in the morning, but it's on the OoP for n/b 6 pm Turkish time. So she'll have an hour to finish the dubs Final then get into the teleporter ...

There was no possibility of Anna signing in by phone. Her doubles match was after the sign-in time, and I doubt if her singles had finished in time either. An International tournament will only accept sign-ins from players in 75K events or above who are still playing elsewhere and therefore require a delayed start (up to 24 hours - expect Heather to play tomorrow unless Daniilidou pulls out and is replaced by an alternate, if any exist).  She is not allowed to pull out of the doubles to play qualifying for another tournament, but could have tanked (though disrespectful to her partner) had the semi been scheduled to finish before the sign-in deadline.

Cant see Eleni playing doubles, travelling and then winning. Hope Im right....

By my calculations a victory against Eleni would move Heather up to #4 GB?

Johanna Konta is playing right now. I expected Heather to come out on the other court but instead the moved the Bovina match onto that court.

Great win for Konta! Any one know will she play for England soon?

Main Draw

R1

Anne Keothavong (GBR) v Sofia Arvidsson (SWE) - winner to play a qualifier or 6th seed Polona Hercog

Marina Erakovic (NZL) v Elena Baltacha (GBR) - winner to play Kristyna Pliskova or second seed Na Li

Anne has played Arvidsson 10 times, down 3-7 on the head to head, the last occasion being a narrow loss in the Memphis semi earlier this year.

Na Li will be looking for revenge over Bally for two wins this year, if both win their openers

Heather would go equal on ranking points with Cav.

With the points that Cav drops, and with now not apparently playing this coming week, Cav will be on 242 points in Monday week's rankings.

Heather if she wins her QR1 gets 6 points, which would replace her 16th score of 1 point, taking her also to 242 points.

The initial tiebreaker is :  The player with the most combined total points from Grand Slams, Premier Mandatory Tournaments, Premier 5 Tournaments and the Sony Ericsson Championships.

That's Cav if Grand Slam qualifying counts. If, as I suspect, it doesn't, it would be Heather. All very straightforward, so I didn't need to change this post a few times   wink.gif

If all goes according to the plan she confirmed in her radio interview earlier in the year (after her Raleigh title) then she should be eligible to play for Britain in about a year's time.

JoKo plays fourth on centre tomorrow, with Heather's match rescheduled for 2nd on court 1 (not before 11am BST) and her second round, if successful, fifth on the same court (against Vitalia Diatchenko)

That's a disgraceful rule which allows a player to be able to postpone her match to the next day, thus severely handicapping her opponent who would have to play twice in one day. If she can't play at the original scheduled time she should be out and her opponent in this case Heather allowed to progress to the next round.
