Week 30: ATP 250 series - Farmers Classic ($619,500), Los Angeles (hard) - R2: Andy vs Tim Smyczek

Andy's never played Smyczek, an American qualifier & the world N° 192, before.  Can't see see this encounter being anything other than a win for Andy, possibly in three sets, since he's bound to be a bit "ring-rusty", not having hit a ball in anger since Wimbledon.  At least he'll have a chance to recover from any jet lag, though, as he's not on today's OoP. wink

Smyczek WR 192 lost to Evo 12-10 in the 3rd in Wimbledon QR1 this year. He is also 0-1 v Boggo, Wardy and Marray too and 1-1 v Baker in recent years, so it would be a big shock if Andy didn't finish him off very quickly.

Yes, assuming Andy's head is in a good place, and that he's been putting in good work, I've got to be taking this as a straight sets win for Andy

That's a shame. I thought Gulbis would have been a good work out for Andy.

Andy won 6'1, 4'6, 6'2.

Good first set. Serve went walkabout in the 2nd.
Picked up a groin/hip niggle (re-occurrence???) in the 3rd and wasn't running much by the 3rd game.
Quite a few service breaks in Sets 2 and 3.
Andy found a way to win but not pretty.

Hope Andy Ireland is there to sort out whatever was troubling him - could just be rustiness and getting used to the courts again causing a twinge or two.

Next up Falla. Andy beat him 7'6, 6'3 in 2005 to take his 2nd Challenger title in Binghamton but they've not met since on the ATP Tour.

Hmm, doesn't sound too good.

Thanks for giving report.  All was good when I went to bed  ( 40 - 0 up, serving in first game  smile  )

Certainly looks as if he did indeed need to be playing a tournament before the Toronto Masters.

As you indicated serve seemed to have been having quite a few problems  :  55% first serves in, 65% serve points won, broken 4 times.

Anyway, I really do hope that Andy hasn't picked up any serious injury and he can come out with a better performance against Falla.

To be honest I was half expecting to wake up to the news that Murray had crashed out. I would have been amazed if he played well last night.

First match for 3 weeks, first match on hard for months an ugly, and a relatively low level tournament all pointed towards some difficulties so an ugly win was probably the best we could expect.

He says it is just soreness and stiffness. I don't suppose he got much training in last week with all the coaching kerfuffle, so he was bound to be rusty.

I hope they can sort out the physical problems for tonight, as Falla the nearly-Fed-killa is a tough customer - I saw both his match with Fed at Wimby and the end of his match with Gulbis last night, he seems to be the sort who can run all day and likes keeping his opponent on the run as well. Not the ideal opponent if your movement is suspect. . .
