RE: Week 29 - ITF ($25K) - Wrexham, Hard

Great stuff Heather.
Improving all week and every match has been comfortable.

Mirza will be tougher, about a 40-60 match against Heather, imo.

Huge. Will be tough but I hope she can take the title now!

Thanks for the report Phil.

It sounds as though Lisa's serve went a bit awol again - is that the case or am I reading too much into it?

Either way, another good week for Lisa - well inside top 300 now and good to see that she's been able to build on her performances in Wimbledon qualies.

That's a big upset as Laine/Mirza have been imperious all week, mind you Tara/Fran make a good team and IMO Tara has been playing very well all week. I also like what I see with Fran, not tall in stature but got all the other qualities to make up for that disadvantage.
Fran together with Daneika share the same coach who appears to be doing a great job. They were even doing sprints just outside the hotel before going to the courts to practice one day.

Fab win by the unseeded Brits in the doubles from a set down, particularly impressive that they held their nerve in the MTD against a much higher-ranked and much more experienced pair.

It's also the first doubles win at 25K+ level for an all-GB pair this year.

Heather's win today will move her up to GB no. 6 ahead of Mel, and she'd actually move ahead of Laura if she could win the Final!

I didn't see much of either match as I turned up too late thinking the semi finals would be played one after the other, so I asked a guy who had watched all of the match and thats what he told me. Lisa's serve is the weakest aspect of her game in part due to the long term problem she has/will have with her shoulder. Heather was very good yersterday and by all accounts in similar form today. I felt Heather was a bit subdued during the early part of the week but certainly looked much more chipper after her win yesterday.

^^^^^^

Have just checked the ITF site & that's endorsed the LTA version, so looking good that the Beeb got it wrong...! biggrin

Ah, well, the Beeb. . . I remember the days when they were to be relied on. . .

The ITF site has the British pair winning.

Edit - must type more quickly!

Someone queried this on twitter too - my response was that it's like being caught between a rock and a hard place wink but I'd trust even the LTA over the BBC when it comes to tennis info!

The only nagging doubt is that when you get Brits playing experienced non-Brits, 13-11s don't usually go the Brits' way!

Both ITF and LTA drawsheets agreeing must be a good sign, unless someone passed on the score to one person who was updating the drawsheets for both - I don't know exactly how it all works, and since it's the weekend, they aren't updating the LTA news quickly.

I also left Wrexham before the doubles so can't give the confirmation from the horses mouth. However the lady who updates the LTA / ITF websites is to be respected, having spoken to her a few times this week.

More confirmation from the LTA site - well, sort of!

"There was a British win in the doubles event as Anna Fitzpatrick and Tara Moore defeated the No.1 seeds Laine and Mirza 2-6, 6-3, [13-11].

Victory for Fitzpatrick comes in her first $25k event whilst Moore, who trains at the Gosling International High Performance Centre in Hertfordshire, is enjoying a successful grass court season after reaching the quarter-finals of the girls singles at Wimbledon."

I think the "in her first $25K event" gives away the fact that they mean Francesca Stephenson not Fitzy, but it's an unfortunate slip given the BBC-induced confusion! disbelief
