RE: Week 26 Futures - Great Britain F8 ($10k) - Manchester (grass)

If rankings are anything to go by should have 8 brits in R16 with a guranteed 6 going through

Anything other than a British winner of this event would be a very huge disappointment given that Baker, Ward, Evans, Goodall etc are the class apart in this field.

Would hope to see Ward or Baker take the title to have some good grass court form going into the Davis Cup tie, and it would also be a bit embarassing for them to be selected if they are losing to other Brits.

Although, I wouldn't be surprised to see Baker lose to Slabba if they met, and both Goodall/Evans could trouble Ward if they play their best and Ward isn't in his Eastbourne form.

The initial DC squad has to be named tomorrow, so that should put the mockers on Baker & Wardy in Manchester ... wink

Chance for Toby Martin to get a point??

Why wasn't Evo given a WC, it wasn't just because he forget to enter since Baker was given one as well. Hopefully he won't have to put up with unfair treatment from the LTA for the rest of his career. We don't really help ourselves in bringing another top player through when our most talented youngster is cut adrift so early on in his career.

I would like to think it was because Evo was very / too late in making his intentions clear.

Trouble is with the LTA's form, it is not unreasonable to wonder otherwise.

Anyone planning on going down later in the week?

I'm planning on going down with a few friends on either Tuesday or Wedesnday.

I assume in asking you are also planning on attending - what day(s)?

Probably Wednesday/Thursday

First few results in:

Jamie Baker (Gbr) bt James Cluskey (Irl) 6-1 6-2

Divij Sharan (Ind) bt Patrik Brydolf (Swe) 6-3 4-6 6-2

Colin Ebelthite (Aus) bt Alan Bevan (Gbr) 6-2 6-0,

Good win for Baker to win very easily (maybe this is the good grass court result that Smith was talking about)

Looks good efforts by Bains and Fitzy and bit more of a struggle than should be expected for Evo.

Would be nice if someone can strike for GB against the rankings and we get more than 8 through to the last 16.

A lot of expected results, but great to see Martin win the tiebreak and get a ranking point and add another British name to the ranking lists.

Evans seems to lose the first set against players he should beat easily a lot at the moment - don't know whether he just is starting matches very slowly or knows that he is good enough to win regardless so can also afford to spend a set trying new things.

Would expect Baker, Goodall, Evans, Milton and Ward all to win, while Rice and Slabba have pretty good chances to do so as well.

evosmile at least got the win, would love him to win this event, really send a message to the lta who aren't giving him anything, GB tennis is bad enough, so what do we do, write off a potential top 100 player.
