Appears a much improved performance but as Indy tells us rightly so it is impossible to tell from watching the live score what her level of play was. It appears to be a very plucky performance with the usual inherent weaknesses on serve. Never felt she was going to win but much happier with her performance on the face of it. I wonder though whether she would have been able to have seen out the win if given the opportunity. Her confidence levels in general must be shot to pieces.
I may get a chance to give a more detailed report later in the week when BOTB has got to the 'easy' stage (at the moment I'm just trying to take the odd break from the BOTB spreadsheets to catch up on the posts here before another pile of posts get added tomorrow ) but this was a much improved perfomance from Katie - having seen all of this match, all of Laura's match and bits of all the others, Katie put up easily the best fight - indeed, the match had more intensity and more power in the shots than all the other matches involving Brits put together, even if that's not saying that much.
Her confidence really shouldn't be shot to pieces by this loss - she certainly didn't choke at any point, I'd say. With her lack of height, she's never going to win service games that easily and she couldn't quite match Alona's killer cross-court forehand (which is probably a major reason why the Ukrainian is top 30) but otherwise she matched her blow for blow.
Mel's match on the other hand (the other one people might not have seen much of) was so tedious and uninspring that even the umpire announcing the scores sounded incredibly bored.

So they are all out. Abyssmal. On here you hear too much, they will take only positives, they will learn from this. They are well into their 20s now, how long do we keep saying this. Now need to give Watson, Robson, Moore and all the teenagers showing promise every oppertunity they can. moore by the way is whipping top juniors at Roehampton.
I watched all matches in their entirety except for Laura and Mel's match, which I actually sat on the court of in the second set but spent most of it watching the Llodra match to the side.
Not much to say about Bally's and Anne's match. They both should have won, and it's ridiculous they didn't. So poor and I'm so angry they didn't close it out whe it should have been no problem. The one thing I will say is Anne's serve is so slow it's a joke.
Katie's match was easily the best match I saw. From the moment she went match point down in the second set she played very, very well. Such quality from both players, so many winners and long rallies. When Katie broke for 4-4 in the decider the crowd went ballistic, and someone shouted "are you a genius?" I think at that point Katie suddenly realised where she was. If she had held serve I think she would have won the match.
Heather showed some encouraging signs and nice to see a Brit with a bit of variation, but it is a match which she should have won really.
I was with Steven at Mel, Laura and Katie's matches. Well we were half a stand away form each other at the start of Katies match but finished the third set together lol.
Mel's match was very uninspiring. I was watching Gabashvili/Delgado and the start of Schwank/Korolev out of the corner of my eye. Kulikova didn't have to do much - got on top early and found it easy. I think Mel needs to meet the author of The Defamation of Strickland Banks.
Laura was a little diappointing for me. Jankovic hates grass and had no warm up tournaments so Laura really needed to start well. By the time she was really playing in middle to back end of set 2 she looked like she belonged however. I do worry that she has been put on a show court at 15 and now 16 and if Wimbledon aren't careful they will have placed a large monkey on her back.
I was so very impressed with Katie. And might I say (permission granted from the wife) what a little ripper she is . I don't think there is much more she could have done - and well done to the crowd for their support. Personally I thought she got a terrible call towards the end on the baseline. Two America sounding peoples cheering for Bondy were doing my head in - there's playful banter and then there is being rude.
The thing I noticed about Katie which was so very odd is that she doesn't seem able to keep her head still (I think it was even more pronounced on b/hs (bit it may be f/hs)) when she plays a shot. Of course it could be a natural style worth keeping a la Jimmy Anderson's bowling action for England cricket which has been allowed to revert to its original state.I really am not a tennis coach but it did seem a little unusual and I can't help wondering if she could find the extra 5% consistency that players like Bondarenko have by keeping her head still.
Laura is the one player (apart from Andy) that I don't mind seeing drawn on a show court - all of her best performances seem to come in front of huge crowds. Any simians present are from her performances not what courts they put her on.

Had Laura drawn someone unseeded rather than the world number 4, I don't think she would have been on centre court.
Jankovic herself could be justified being on centre court, so it was logical for that match to go there.
It's just that Laura has drawn two high profile players in her two appearances that has meant she has been on two show courts.
