An abysmal final set and a well deserved win for Martic. Alas, I feel that Heather is probably our only realistic hope in getting anyone through to the second round.
At least thats pressure off the other girls, if there is any positives to take from the match I would take that.
And Falla is proving at the moment that upsets can happen.... If that doesnt whip the crowds energy up in time to cheer on Laura then I dunno what will!
Another recent DC nemesis Przysiezny has beaten Ljubicic in straight sets to join Berankis in Round 2. I guess that means Ilhan is a good pick for the US Open.
Very disappointing result for Elena as that was a very winnable match and one that given her improvement this season she would have expected to have won beforehand, never mind at a 6-2, 5-3 up.
Just seemed to slip away too easily in the end and by the time she had managed to re-raise her game, the match was almost gone.
Very disappointing, particularly in this was a match Bally began well in and had good control of.
Of course Martic is no mug, currently ranked 76 and was as high as 63 in April but had a rather disappointing clay season. However a good young player generally on the rise. It has to be said she played better as the match went on which was partly to be expected since she was so unused to grass, she certainly got to balls and made shots latterly she wasn't making early on.
That all said, Bally of course should be in Round 2. As Martic improved, her game went off and she became more tight and just generally nervous looking.
A great opportunity missed against a very decent opponent who took the openings Bally gave her.
As we know Bally is having a great season and this is just one match, important as it was, particularly profilewise in GB. She'll be very disappointed no doubt with herself, ashamed hmm I dont see why if she's tried her best but not played well.
Anyway, hope she picks herself up quickly and continues generally in the better form she has so often displayed this year.

The reason she will be ashamed is because it was Martics first ever WTA match on grass shouldnt have ended with a win. She should have been sent packing and we would be looking forward to seeing Bally again on Wednesday.
That said, shes still got the US Open, and other big HC events where there is every chance she can score some big points. Furthermore, Anne should start climbing which will give her a travel partner. As much as this loss hurts its clear her opponent will go far and Bally will be no worse off than the other 32 women who lose today, nor the 32 who lose tommorow.
Shes come back from far worse than this, lets hope she hits the HCs with a vengeance.
LOL, not being rude but what did Mel do during this fitness block of hers? She doesnt look an fitter to me. I know her knees are strapped but she is still slow, her foot movement is poor and she doesnt know how to build points. dissapointing to see really.
Baltacha will be kicking herself over her match and you have to question how much the pressure got to her today. Perhaps as British number one she felt it a bit more?
The thing that surprised me was that she didn't seem to have the same gutsy mentality to fight back when things started going wrong. That's been a big part in how she's got to where she is so it's odd that it was missing today.
