RE: Wimbledon 2010 'Battle of the Boards' pick 'em contest

Yes I watched the final, I had freed up my Sunday in case Murray got to the final so I had to really.

I would agree it was Berdych playing badly that made it a bad final, but that just proves how boring Nadal is because he can't make a match exciting on his own. He has been involved in some of the most exciting matches of recent times, but that has been down to the contrast in styles of play rather than Nadal actually making it good.

As an aside the mixed doubles finals was very good, with three of the best doubles players of the last decade and more (Moodie as good as a player should not be quite held in the same regard) playing and some wonderful touches and variety shown.

How do explain some of Murray's matches being boring? Is he also not exciting enough to make a match interesting on his own?

When you update the rankings can you post the list of the top points scorers of 2010 as well please?

biggrin LOL! I'm just saying... much as I wholeheartedly support Andy all the way, not every single one of his matches is absolutely scintillating, earth-shattering stuff! But that doesn't make him boring... lol, despite what people say about him having a "monotone voice" giggle.gif . When I saw Andy in 2008 in the fourth round (he was either against Kiefer or Haas), my Dad fell asleep and had to leave to go and get a coffee to wake himself up, and I think I may have almost dozed off myself at a couple of points.

I think it has to be conceded that every player plays at least a few dull matches in their career. smile Equally, every player has their thrillers.

POST-WIMBLEDON 2010 BOTB PICK 'EM RANKINGS

The new overall ranking list (with 726 ranked players) and the pick 'em 'Hall of Fame' after Wimbledon 2010 can now be found at http://www.freewebs.com/britishtennis/Competitions.html

TEAMS

Winning the Wimbledon teams league has enabled TAT to extend their lead at the top to 159 points ahead of BT.net, who stay at WR 2 after a 3rd place finish at SW19. Some way back, Wimbledon 4th placed MTF complete the new top three, rising 3 places and equalling the 'career high' they set after the 2008 AO.

Just 17 points behind them, Wimbledon KO winners AM.com stay in 4th place ahead of Rusedski.co.uk, who remain 5th.

MTL are the highest new entrants at WR 16, with NewBallsPlease also making a first time appearance in the rankings at WR 18. No teams outside the top three have risen more than one place, though GBTG, up 1 to WR 13, have hit a new high for them.

Four teams have fallen more than one place - defending Wimbledon teams league champions the Feddies fall 3 to WR 6 after finishing last this time, defending Wimbledon team KO champions Team CC fall 2 to WR 10, and T4Y & the Hewitts both fall 3 places to WR 14 & WR 19 respectively after failing to get a full team out this time.

NEW INDIVIDUAL TOP 10

We have a new world no. 1 - after finishing 35th at Wimbledon, Scotsguy (CC) (who also finished 3rd in both Shanghai & Paris and top 10 at RG) has risen 1 place to become the first CCer to make it to the top since Ashley Harkleroad's ***** and Pebs made it in CC's glory days from late 2008 to early 2009. They of course later went to MP - I wonder if CC will hold onto their latest star?

Post-RG no. 1 Scratchy (BT) finished 37th at Wimbledon but had quite a lot of points to defend and has dropped back to WR 2, just over 200 points behind, with Shabba (IN), back up 1 to WR 3, completing a top three that consists of all those who have been world no. 1 after tournaments this year.

Talking of ex-CCers, a 6th place finish for DJ (MP) has seen her shoot up 63 places to WR 4, a new career high for her by miles, while top 60 finishes for Hen (MT), up 14 to WR 5, and Roy (GR), up 4 to WR 6, see them move up to new career highs as well. Other new members of the top 10 hitting new career highs are eblunt (BT), up 17 to WR 8 after finishing 9th at Wimbledon, and gu3 (IN), up 8 to WR 10.

TimS (GR), down 1 to WR 7, and Dentist Appointment (IN), down 1 to WR 9, have both dropped back slightly but have hung on in the top 10 unlike Steven (GR), down 8 to WR 11 despite a top 60 finish at Wimbledon, and t12j23r90 (CC), down 9 to WR 16 despite a top 20 finish, Akhenaten (BT), down 24 to WR 33, and Portsey (BT), down 41 to WR 46, who all had points from very high finishes at Wimbledon last year to defend.

In addition to the new top three, four more former world no. 1s are now in the top 25 - Linda (AM), up 2 to WR 13, cazza99 (AM), up 20 to WR 20, goldfish (BT), down 10 to WR 21, and Richard Morris/ASE (AM), down 2 to WR 25, are all looking ominous again after in most cases recovering Agassi-like from huge slides that saw them well outside the top 100.

ON THE RISE

Two entrants who only made their BOTB debuts at this year's AO have made three-figure jumps into the top 50 after their first chance to get a 7th counting score - Sparkey (GB), up 100 to WR 15, must be a contender for year-end no. 1 after top 20 finishes at both the AO and RG plus a 34th place finish at Wimbledon, while consistent performances from Irena2 (TA), up 101 to WR 43, have lifted her into the top 50 in lightning quick time as well.

Wimbledon winner jesswrig (TA) has risen 50 places to WR 29, 4th placed Drop-Shot (TA) is up 89 to WR 24, and two more of the Wimbledon top 20 have risen more than 50 places into the top 50 - Claire Bear (AM), up 57 to WR 37, and Snoo Foo (MT), up 67 to WR 41 after a second top 20 finish in a row.

A top 20 finish for JTContinental (TA) sees him rise 125 to WR 53, while 3rd placed Gillyflower (GR) rises 107 to WR 57 and Anna (BT) rises 104 to WR 80. However, the fastest riser in the top 100 is Wimbledon 5th place finisher Kayce (JM), up 146 to WR 68.

The fastest riser in the top 200 is Bumpington (GR), up 152 from WR 300 to WR 148 after finishing 20th at Wimbledon, while the biggest jump into the top 250 comes from Wimbledon runner-up motobass (TA), up 245 to WR 240. Gigi (AM), up 265 to WR 301, thejerem34 (RG), up 274 to WR 302, bandtree (MT), up 252 to WR 318, and ragdoll (AM), up 260 to WR 366, have all moved up over 250 places, but the biggest riser of all is GOATFed (RF), up 334 to WR 328.

The highest new entrants are Wimbledon 7th placed nerdhooligan (NB), new at WR 323, and 10th placed Jackobeanz (NB), new at WR 334, while Ivanatis (MT), up 69 to WR 164, is the only other top 10 finisher at Wimbledon who has not yet been mentioned.

LAST YEAR'S WIMBLEDON WINNERS

The big fallers are usually those who didn't play in the latest pick 'em and are running out of counting scores, so when looking at fallers it's probably more interesting to see how the top three in the event coming off from last year have fared.

Last year's Wimbledon winner T01 (CC) has not played that often since and had already dropped outside the top 150 - a further fall of 134 to WR 306 is the result of finishing outside the top half at Wimbledon this year.

Last year's runner-up jack.hl.ng (CC) did finish in the top half this year (just), but also falls more than 100 places, down 106 to WR 363, while Portsey (BT) has continued to perform well since finishing 3rd last year, but falls 41 to WR 46 after also only just finishing in the top half this year.

The biggest faller of all though was Laura (AR), down 306 to WR 661 after finishing in the bottom 50 while defending 22nd place points and not having played any tournaments between last year's Wimbledon and this year's.

THE NEXT PICK 'EM

Either Canada or Cincy, to be confirmed on @botb1 twitter and on the main Competitions page around the end of this month.

Ooooh, I'm back in the top 100! I think I'm at a new career high, at 89. Up 6 places after Wimbledon. I'm twinned with our old DC friend Michal Przysiezny.

I think Dad is also at a career high of 242, and he's twinned with Stefano Galvani. He's done well - up 83.
