Fitzy & Jade W levelled the match, taking the TB by, I think, 7-5. Unfortunately, they've jst been broken to in the fourth game of the final set: 1-3*.
Excellent win by Lisa, who becomes our first rookie to reach final qualifying since Amanda Janes (later becoming Amanda Keen) in 1997. The only players to make it since then were Karen Cross in 2001 (qualified) and Naomi Cavaday last year (didn't), but both of these were experienced players who had been top 200 and played at Wimbledon.
A report on GBTG echoes Naomi's coach's evaluation of Hlavackova, and her aggressive style is likely to make it much more difficult for Lisa tomorrow.
So disappointing from Naomi. Really thought she would fight her way through the qualies. Not good at all.
Apparently from some of the above, Hlavackova played very well and much better than in their previous meetings. She is also higher anyway in the world rankings than Cav by over 50 places.
So clearly quite a bit of credir must go to Hlavackova.
It would always have been a pretty good achievement by Cav to have come through qualifying.
I'm disappointed yes, but don't see it nearly as bad as you make out.
Yes, huge ( so far 50 ) points haul for Lisa with these 2 great wins.
It was only a week or so ago I was saying how there was such a very clear top 10 in the GB women's rankings and who could we see maybe coming up from above.
I suggested, as probably most would, that Lisa was the best candidate but I wasn't expecting so much so soon. Indeed these points would have been enough to be overtaking Heather in 10th place if Heather herself hadn't been making waves down in Eastbourne to move up herself.
Would be really tremendous if Lisa could make the main draw but clearly will be an extremely tough task for her against a Hlavackova who evidently played very well in beating Cav.
I suspect Lisa would feel much more comfortable playing Naomi too, even though she is the lower ranked of the two. Shame we don't have a guaranteed qualifier but very good to see a youngster performing well in such a big tournament.
