Yeah ur right, EWS impressed me, and so did Lucy Brown. She looked positioned to sneak the set or at least push it into a TB. Either way, very good effort against a good grass courter and she is certainly one to watch now. Will be interesting to see how she does in the juniors, no doubt the confidence from here wil help
Lisa did an interview for a local paper a few weeks back where she said her target was to be ranked 350 by September, but would settle for 400. I guess those targets need to be revised :)
2001 was the last exceptional year - six won through with Karen Cross going on to qualify
So 2 is reasonable, even allowing for the presence of a higher ranked player than usual. It's a case of good luck for Lisa/Cav possibly at the expense of Jos. Usually when a player (Camerin) is promoted to the main draw on the evening before play starts they replace her with the highest non-seed (Niculescu). For some reason they decided to put the alt (Barthel) directly in Camerin's place, so Jos missed the chance of an easier match, but Cav/Lisa's section is very promising as a result.
Lucy's score against a highly ranked and accomplished grass player is remarkable considering she has only played a handful of 10K matches, whilst Em's defeat must be a heartbreaker for her.

Does seem a bit strange and certainly would seem fairer overall to put the next ranked into Camerin's place with in this case Jos presumably then meeting the alt.
I would have thought there should be defined rules on this and if so, that in the specific circumstances these have been followed here. If there are not, that would seem open to abuse.
QR1: (WC) Emily Webley-Smith WR 443 lost to (WC) Marina Erakovic (NZL) WR 466 by 6-7(5) 7-6(6) 6-3 QR1: (WC) Lucy Brown UNR lost to (q17) Shenay Perry (USA) WR 123 by 2 & 5 QR1: (WC) Anna Smith WR 265 lost to Mirjana Lucic (CRO) WR 181 by 4 & 2 QR1: (WC) Naomi Broady WR 208 lost to Nikola Hofmanova (AUT) WR 194 by 4 & 4 QR1: (WC) Jocelyn Rae WR 494 lost to Monica Niculescu (ROU) WR 139 by 3 & 4 QR1: (WC) Lisa Whybourn WR 410 beat Sally Peers (AUS) WR 209 by 6-4 7-6(3) QR1: Naomi Cavaday WR 192 beat Lesya Tsurenko (UKR) WR 189 by 6-2 3-6 6-3
Looking at the losses, Emily came within two points of victory in a titanic struggle, Lucy did very well to take 7 games off Perry, Anna was always likely to find the former Wimbledon semi-finalist too strong on grass, Naomi B's straight sets defeat was a bit disappointing and Joss will probably be disappointed not to have pushed Niculescu a bit harder.
Moving onto the wins, Lisa did extremely well to beat Laura's AO doubles partner (who also reached a 25K singles Final on glass in Mildura earlier this year) in straight sets, and Cav righting her Stockholm loss to Tsurenko was good news, if pretty much expected.
QR2: (WC) Lisa Whybourn WR 410 v Anna Floris (ITA) WR 150 - 1st on C16
Yesterday's win for Floris was, as far as I can tell, the first match she had ever played on grass! She also came into the tournament on a 6 match losing streak. However, she is on a 10-year, 10-match winning streak against Brits stretching back to a loss to Lorna Woodroffe in the year 2000, including a convincing 1 & 4 win against Katie O'Brien in March this year.
QR2: Naomi Cavaday WR 192 v (q22) Andrea Hlavácková (CZE) WR 137 - 2nd on C16
Hlaváková (who, by the way, has a father called Jan, a mother called Jana and a sister called Jana too!) is 23 and at a career high. She beat Jade Windley, Heather Watson and Anna Smith on her was to the Sutton 25K title earlier this year but Cav has very good memories of playing her, having beaten her in the Final of the Brescia 25K last month to win her first title on clay. She also beat her in Sutton in 2009 having lost to her there in 2008. The H2H is actually 3-1 in Naomi's favour, including a 7-5 ret. win in Stockholm last year.
The winners of the two matches above will play each other in the FQR.
