Week 24 - Wimbledon Qualifying

I pm'd you steven - it DOES say so on the Wimbledon website!

Pretty dire doubles draw for our top teams, only Delgo and Goodall have a good chance at a win. The winners of the 3 quarter Brit match could play the seeded pair of Granollers/Robredo so are probably the best hope for a third round spot.

Did Baker/Ward not get the last WC then? Anyone know who got in instead?

6 LLs in the draw - I haven't checked, but I imagine that means that if Boggo had got past Mahut, he'd have had a very good chance of getting in even if he'd lost to Koubek. Typical!

Ah good, that's good news. smile.gif The tickets page my link took me to was less than half the length of that one ... do they really have two, one with more extensive info than the others?!

Maybe they're going to advertise it mainly through the emails this year to a) encourage people to register for the emails and b) cut the strain on the Ticketmaster site slightly - though it's not as if the link won't get out there!

Not sure of the ranking off my head, but Boggo might have snuck into the draw for the lucky losers (Ventura is ranked higher than him so would be ahead, but that might be all, and obviously Koubek then wouldn't be in the draw.) Knowing his luck though he would have missed out in the draw.

No idea who got the last doubles WC. No lucky losers are in the draw so it must have been awarded to someone (or they gave it up on Sunday and just didn't tell anyone). None of the doubles teams look like a wild card worthy team anyway.

Terrible draw for the doubles guys as well. Marray/Murray won't get through round one, and Eaton/Inglot won't get through round two if they win their first match, which isn't that easy. Goodall/Delgado should win their opener, but won't get any further than that if they do.

At least one of Boggo/Slabba or Hutchins/Kerr will win, and Robredo/Granollers aren't the greatest doubles team, but they have had some very good results at the back end of last year. Probably depends on Robredo's fitness and form as to whether we could have an upset there.

Shocking draw for Flemski as well. Clement and Mahut are a very good team and they beat them earlier in the year, so not as easy start at all. And if they get through that, they'll face the Bryan's!

At least with the draw we should see the Brits on TV courts, but may only get one chance to see them.

Not a great draw for Baker either, as even though Beck isn't anything special on a grass court, he'll have enough power to get past him I imagine.

Murray though has a very nice looking draw. A basic walkover in the first round, a nice match against Koubek/Nieminen in round two (who will test him, but don't have the power to beat him), a very easy 3rd round match, and not too much harder in the 4th round. And he's in Nadal's half as well, who has the only hard draw of any of the top players.

What are the rules for Grand Slam Lucky Losers?

If there is just one spot, then the four highest ranked lucky losers go into a draw.

As there were 6 lucky losers this time, I think it goes to the amount of lucky loser spots (plus two) for a draw.

So Boggo would have been ranked in the top 8 losers and would have had a 6 in 8 chance of making it

^^^

And if he had got a LL spot, he would have got either Becker, Gabashvili, de Voest, Nieminen, Lopez or Fischer.

So would have had a 1/3 chance of a decent draw (de Voest and Fischer)

Yes, with the possible exception of Querry, there are no grass courters of note in his quarter, and a quarter final vs one of Verdasco, Almagro or Tsonga really isn't too frightening. And I'm sure he'd prefer Rafa to Fed in a possible Semi.

All the nasty seeds that could have been in his quarter are elsewhere - Sodapop, Roddick, Birdbrain, Hewitt, Cilic were the ones to avoid for me.

Mind you, Fed's got a peach of a draw as well. 2 nice easy rounds, Robredo then Melzer then  Birdbrain or Davydenko.

Not too worried about Querrey... he may have won Queens, but the highest ranked player he beat was Robby Ginepri, who is ranked 70 in the world.

And has lost in the first round in 9 of the 15 grand slams he has played, so has a habit of not playing his best tennis when it really matters.

I think Beck is a good draw tbh, the highest rank player he has beaten is 194 at Wimbledon (well, in qualies), never making it past the first round. Obviously Beck is the favourite but in terms of players you might hope Baker would stand a change against, Beck has to be up there.

Beck though did beat Kiefer and Stakhovsky last week in Halle (Kiefer is a good grass courter, while Stakhvosky has reached the Rosmalen final without dropping a set), so he is clearly capable on a grass court.

Yeh but without seeing those matches its impossible to say how well either really played. Halle aint Wimbledon anyway, different country, different feel and Baker will have the home advantage.

As I say, Beck is the favourite, that isnt in doubt, but avoiding the seeds and the real grass court experts has to be considered a reasonably nice draw in my eyes at least. Looking forward to seeing it. biggrin

Maybe it's because they completely changed the Wimbledon website? Admittedly it took quite some navigating in order to find that page, but I can't imagine they'd say that unless it was true.

I've been signed up to Wimbly emails for ages but I've not received an email about it. I did receive an email on Wednesday saying that they would email again on Thursday with ticketmaster details, but then I never received another email on Thursday! confuse
