RE: Week 24 - WTA Premier 600k - Eastbourne (grass)

After another very quick game, it's still only 8 points. Brit-basher Groth win 3-6 6-3 6-0. cry

Can we add up Sam and Jarmilla's BBSs together for a supoer Groth streak?

That takes Jarmila's BBS to 10 - no less than 7 of them have been 3-set heartbreakers. Still 6 behind hubby's ongoing streak of 16 though. Grrrrrr ...

Wonderful news as Mel finally gets a good win under her belt - thanks to Pauline Parmentier who is an anti-Groth as far as we are concerned smile

Mel wins 6-3 6-4 and plays the talented Bojana Jovanovski (SRB) next, who lost to Laura in the quarters of Wimbledon 2008

Naomi's last set was calamitous - it looks as if Jarmila had worked out her weaknesses by then, and the result looked pretty inevitable by the middle of the second set, but even so 8 points in a set on grass in a match where you have won a set isn't good

Chuffed for Mel - great win. How does Jos go from barely beating Claire Ricketts on Thursday to comfortably beating a top 150 player 2 days later?! Bizzare. But welcome!

Mel had clearly been playing better without winning so this is not a huge surprise unlike Joss's result. Mel desperately needed the win going into Wimby so majorly chuffed for her.

Rae looked pretty decent in what I saw of her match, but Bratchikova wasn't up to much and went a whole two games at one point without putting a groundstroke in court. Rae's got a very good game for grass though and could do some damage in the future on it.

First time I've seen Watson play and was a little disappointed... don't know how she usually plays but she reminded me of a Wozniacki/Jankovic style player who just puts the ball in court and waits for mistakes. May have been that she knew she had the beating of Smith in the rallies as she is usually more aggressive, but she played very defensively today. Smith though did make far too many mistakes in the end and looked beaten as soon as she was broken back for 4-4.

Mel played very well today and fully deserved the win. Jovanovski is beatable as well, but she seems to call for her coach every possible chance she can... she won 7-5, 6-1 today and called for the coach at least three times.

Katie played okay but you never felt confident that she could win the match. Her shot on match point looked in to me but was called out, and it was just accepted by Katie without any kind of protest about it.

Not sure whether any of the girls will win tomorrow... would have Mel down as the most likely to if she can play like she did today.

Helen Parish may disagree, but on the whole, there seem to be worse draws for a GB girl.

If Heather ends up as good as Wozniacki/Jankovic I will be very happy indeed.
Thanks for the report.

Firstly, Wozniacki and Jankovic are two completely different players. I'm not a fan but it's a huge misconception when people call Jelena a "pusher", she's a counterpuncher, she plays angles and uses the opponent's power against them. She plays a very attractive and enjoyable game and I agree with the comparison between them. Wozniacki, on the other hand, is indeed a player who simply gets the ball back.

From what I gather, I think Heather used to be a very defensive player in Juniors and only since the end of last year has she really began to start playing a more offensive game. I actually think she was pretty aggressive yesterday. She came out moving the ball around well and hitting winners from both sides but I think as the match got tighter and she hit a few errors, she became much more afraid to miss. But that is probably due to the fact that she simply still isn't used to/confident in playing aggressive tennis. She needs to come to the net more and mix it up because she is good at both. I wrote some reports on TF so i'll C&P thm here:

Heather Watson vs Anna Smith
NID, Heather just had to make things much harder than they needed to be and she wasnt helped by the fact that almost every breakpoint she had was saved by a lucky netcord winner from Smith. A reservation I have about Heathers game is the fact that usually when shes pushed out wide, theres no effort to play herself back into the point she just tries to hit the ball hard back into the middle and usually the ball ends up in the service box and gives the opponent an easy putaway, which is holding her back considering she moves and anticipates so well. Anyway, both girls came out looking to dictate. Annas game is made for grass decent first serve, very good second serve, flat strokes and she clearly loved hitting lower balls. She could hit winners off both sides but her forehand was the main breadwinner. It was also clear that Heather was the better player from the very beginning. Her strengths are her movement, anticipation and offensive shot selection. Both of her groundstrokes are both pretty good and completely technically sound her forehand had much more topspin on it and she hits a lot of angles on that side whereas her backhand is much flatter and she favours the backhand DTL.

The first set was pretty engaging, Heather was moving the ball around and looking to be aggressive whereas Annas play was much more central and she was trying to grind Heather down until she was able to pounce on a shorter reply. The provided some nice rallies, including a one in which Anna worked all the way off the court and then Heather came up with a forehand down the line winner from practically in the linespersons chair. After the first set however, the quality of play dropped. A couple of things I noticed were that Anna netted almost every high backhand, Heather was hitting a lot of balls late and clearly disliked the grass, Heather needs to mature and not get annoyed at herself so easily and finally, the ballboys and girls are an embarrassment, but more on that later.

Naomi Broady vs. Jarmila Groth
Broadz is so slow. Forget Sharapova, forget Dumptruckenport, Naomi seriously cannot retrieve anything. The best highlights of her game are her serve and single hander. Its not an arty backhand though, it is as flat as a pancake and almost has the same effect as a double hander. She hits it very well but was often out of position thanks to her foorwork (or lack of). I only saw about 5 games of the second set and the match was completely dominated by serve, so I cant really comment on details but Jarmila hit a couple of nice shots at the end of the set and I thought she would go onto win. Not sure if she did though.

Pauline Parmentier vs Melanie South
Watched the first set and the end of the match. Mel was playing great, serving well and hitting a lot of winners. She has been playing terribly since she randomly decided to go on a training block in the middle of last year so thats a good win for her. A lot of posters here have called her the worst player to ever enter the top 100 (lulz) but I dont think thats right. Shes especially good on the grass and I hope she can continue to win here, and she has a good chance if she continues to play like that. By the way, I just love Paulines serve. Its so effortless and smooth, it is without a doubt one of the best motions on the tour technically. Her wrist snap is very good and her weight transference is perfect, and its the reason why she is able to hit above 120mph so much with that frame and height.

Joss struggling unfortunately 1-5.
Interesting to hear Heather not enjoying the grass. That surprises me somewhat as I think she is very capable on all surfaces.
