Wrexham seems to be getting weaker and weaker - Cav and Babos are late w/ds, while Anna, Mel and Katie (the latter to play in France) had already withdrawn earlier in the month. Would they all have withdrawn had they known how weak the draw would get, I wonder?

All of the late withdrawals were quite a few days ago for Wrexham. Maybe they heard I might be making the long trek from the north east. Oh and if you want to see a really weak entry list try the Waterloo event in Canada.
After Lucy Brown last week, this week it's Fran Stephenson's turn to get a wild card which will give her a 3rd ranking tournament, and a world ranking.
She might even sneak on to the T25 table in a couple of weeks time.

I've never quite fathomed how the WTA ranking tiebreaks work, but the 1 point for playing in Wrexham might even be enough to make her GB no. 25 two weeks on Monday - it looks like being between her and Helen Parishon 8 points at the moment, unless Elizabeth Thomas (who is due to drop down to 7 points at the end of next week) or someone else currently outside the top 25 does well next week.

Tie-breaking ProceduresWhen two (2) or more players have the same number of ranking points, the tie for the ranking position will be decided according to the
following priorities:
1. The player with the most combined total points from Grand Slams, Premier Mandatory Tournaments, Premier 5 Tournaments and the Sony
Ericsson Championships;
2. The player with the most total points from all Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Tournaments, including Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Championships;
3. The player with the fewest number of Tournaments in a 52-week period (including any Mandatory Tournaments, if the player qualified for
acceptance); and
4. The highest number of points from one (1) single Tournament, then if needed, the second highest and so on. If the results of all of these
tie-breaks are the same, the rank for such players will be considered to be the same or tied for that ranking position. Last Name followed
by First Name will list the players who are tied in the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Ranking Alphabetically. If both the First and Last Names are
the same, the players will be listed according to whichever one is encountered first during the ranking process.

Thanks. I was vaguely aware of these criteria but I thought 3 and 4 were the other way round in priority and I have never quite worked out whether 3 means tournaments from which points were gained (which is the number of tournaments shown on the ranking list - though if 3 and 4 are that way round, I guess it can't mean that or the current rankings wouldn't make sense) or number of tournaments played, i.e. what the ATP tiebreak changed to last year.
The fact that the ATP show the relevant number of tournaments on their ranking list makes it much easier to work out who's likely to be ahead of whom there - with the WTA version, you'd need to check player activity for everyone to work out who should be placed higher.

One late withdrawal for Wrexham and its Laura. Probably the right choice to take a bit of a break as she only really entered Woking and Wrexham to guarantee direct entry into US open qualies, and with her QF points this week mission accomplished. Still intend to go as keen to see Heather/ JoKo, as well of course the support cast.
Smethurst now 3rd alt for Recanti, hasn't withdrawn yet. Players ahead of him are Tosic WR 290, Klec WR 296. No-one from MD has withdrawn yet whilst the two SE are yet to be cleared, Hopefully he can make it.
