40 points for a QR1 win is well worth taking surely? It would seem anyone ranked above her, and anyone good enough to come through qualifying would be good enough to beat Mel, so a main draw win seems unlikley. I hope I'm wrong but I can't see her getting anything more than the 5 points for turning up.
Mel is certainly good enough at present to win an MD, it's just whether she has the confidence to do so, and I worry on that score. Frankly, whether in qualies or MD she could get a bad draw and lose in her current form.
Cav's coach has just confirmed that she chose to go through qualies. Brave from a financial point of view but makes perfect sense from a rankings point of view given the decent points available in women's slam qualifying. (as opposed to the derisory points available in men's qualifying)
I totally agreed with Cav going through qualifying for Birmingham ( and I hoped she would get through ) but when Phil speculated as to what chance she would choose similarly for Wimbledon, I showed how on the ball I am by saying "Nae chance !" ( nae is Scottish for every - no that's not going to work )
As Steven says it's a brave and probably sensible choice too. I just did not expect it.
Thing about Mel is, she is a Wimbledon girl. I mean, she comes from round there, and lists Wimbledon as her club. I think the AELTC is backing their local girl, nothing more.
Me, I'd think she be better off ranking wise in qualies, but it would probably cost her £8K to do that. Which is a big whack of her budget.
Given the LTA said they would recommend 8 players for either draw, 4 have MD, 2 have QD, possibly 1 declined, I wonder where the other one has got to?

I'm wondering if the AELTC turned it down. Could have been Joss, or Lisa.
Was it not a maximum of 8 ?
My thoughts were the 6 announced plus Cav and Lisa. Cav has declined a MDWC ( either before or after any actual offer ) and Lisa has struggled lately when stepping up in class. i would though have still been inclined to give Lisa a QWC.

Yes, but the fact is sadly she must be big odds at present to lose in the 1st round MD, where as she would have much more chance of picking up a very decent 40 points for winning just one qualifying match.
As I understand it the agreement is that they will give 10 WCs to Brits (including play-offs). Once Cav declined (brave decision - deserves to be rewarded) the LTA may have opted to submit a shorter list of 6 and allow the play-offs to produce 4, rather than nominating other people, when there isn't a strong case to be made for any one individual outside the top 300.
One MDWC might be kept open for Cav in the event that she qualifies for Eastbourne, and cannot take part in Wimbledon qualies. That might be why Noppawan Lertcheewakarn isn't included on the list. They have to give her a minimum of a QWC, but may opt to upgrade to a MDWC at the last minute.
Who are these people that are tweeting this ? This is scandalous ! These play-offs are top-secret operations, no information is meant to get out to the public, particularly those strange folk that actually have an interest in British tennis.
You'll have to explain that one, Indiana, I'm lost!
