Thanks. Alexandra seems to have been checking herself now too and says the Evo score was 2-6 6-3 7-6(4) and the Milton score was 4-6 6-3 6-4. Golding was still in the 3rd when she posted.

I realise Oli's actually very mature now ...

Thats actually quite a good shout for an Eastbourne WC, he looks to have a great game for grass, if he doesnt get one i presume he'd play qualies anyway.

No one else seems to be available for one except for early losers of this event

Yeah, hardly like Pauffley's been in the form of his life either. Hopefully the winner of Evo/Golding comes through in the top half, the other 2 guys would probably lose by an embarassing margin.

I'm not keen on knock-out draws to decide wildcards for that very reason, the luck of the draw plays too big a part.

And really, of the two, I hope Evo wins, I'm not sure Ollie is ready for such a high level of opponents yet. At least Evo has been there, done that, and I remember him putting up a darn good show against Davydenko (OK not good on grass but still a class player): I think he should have got a WC without having to win one anyway.

I agree, but luck of the draw plays such a huge part in tennis, especially if you get to Wimbledon (via WC or qualifying) that trying to take the luck of the draw out of this stage of the process would be a bit like King Canute trying to hold the tide back. Btw rRemember that the year Chris Eaton eventually beat Pashanski in the main draw, he lost to Bloomers in the play-offs and only got into qualifying as a kind of 'lucky loser'! smile.gif

I imagine Evo can look after himself, but I do feel sorry for the players in his half of the draw who wouldn't expect to have to get past a player ranked that high in order to get through pre-qualifying.

Sorry but that's shocking that Evo has to go through the wildcard play-off, lta have been so strict this year, they give no hope to our players whatsoever

Considerably less shocking than Mr Evans' general play and woeful regression this year though. He's world ranked mid-300s but playing like someone well outside the top 500. Fair call I think.

Don't know how you work that one out Jeff.  Evo has earned 46 points ranking points this year, which is 5th equal among British men.

If he earned no more points at all this year, he'd end the year in about mid 500s.  As it is if he carries on collecting at his rate so far this year, he'll end at around 100 points, which is equivalent to about WR 360.

Yes, he has been a bit inconsistent and lost some bad matches, and he had a big ranking drop when last year's Jersey title win points came off.

I decided to look at his wins / losses this year as against the rankings of his opponents at the time :

Ranking better than 350  :    Won 5 ( 143 this week, 206, 231, 236, 321 )   Lost 9

Ranking 350 - 500   :    Won 3,  Lost 3

Ranking worse than 500  :  Won 9,  Lost 5   ( 521, 527, 552, 581 last week, 654 )

Actually quite symetrical and I'd say overall this year that suggests his performances maybe more of a level of low 400s, so actually a fair bit lower than his current ranking and rather disappointing but still nothing like someone well outside the top 500.

The knock Evo down thing seems to have enough momentum from the LTA without needing exaggerated help   no.gif
