Very good effort from Laura and continues to show she is not phased by playing top ranked players. Lefty first serve with spin makes it very difficult for her opponents to break her serve on grass. Conditions pretty horrible though so difficult to evaluate this form. Serving second in each set ultimately putting Laura under pressure.
Sarah & Raquel didn't get on court today, but have made the front page of the WTA website with one of their 'getting to know' articles - I hadn't realised that they are going to play World Team Tennis with different teams (with Martina Hingis in Sarah's case)
Kanepi has won 17 or her last 18 matches, all on clay, but has only ever won 1 out of 7 main draw matches on grass.
Yet since beating Bally by virtue of that unfortunate retirement, she went on to dispose of Jarmila Groth by 7-6(5) 7-5 & brushed aside MLDB earlier today by 2 & 2! Her fellow qualifier, the American, Alison Riske (wonder whether that's pronounced "risk" or "risky"? ), has been even more successful, cutting down seeds left, right & centre: after seeing off Aleksandra Wozniak (9) by 2 & 4, then Anna Chakvetadze by 4-6 7-5 6-1 &, a short while ago, none other than Yanina Wickmayer (3) by 6-7(5) 6-4 6-3! If the two girls can keep that kind of form going, they could both do some damage in SW19!
