Seems very odd that Mel (down 23 places to 212 on the year so far) has got a MD WC ahead of Cav (up 27 places to 177 and 3 years younger) and indeed that Mel's got one here but Boggo (up 3 places to 160) hasn't got one at Queen's.
However, compared to the Queen's fiasco, these make perfect sense ...
I asked Nigel Sears what the WCs were and his words were Cav 'opted' to play qualies, so I guess she had the choice but wanted more grass court practice.

Ah ok, fair enough then - I guess we hardly ever learn when the players opt to do things like that and it might explain some of the odd-looking WC decisions, though clearly not the ones at Queen's.

Actually Cav opting to play qualifiers seems entirely sensible.
Her coach seemed strangely pleased to have had Bally first up in Nottingham ( though as was pointed out he may have meant first in the grass court season ), but now more grass court match practice seems to me a good choice rather than just a real bum 1st round main draw.
Yes, I agree. She's also defending 30 points - far better to have a good chance of defending some of them in qualifying and then have a chance to hit the ground running in the MD than to stake it all on a relatively small chance of getting a winnable R1 draw.

I wonder whether she will do the same thing at Wimby, I doubt it somehow.
Nae chance. But I do think playing qualifying here should help her be more ready for R1 - Wimbledon, quite apart from as Steven says giving her more opportunity to gather some points.
That said, of course there's a fair chance she will still have only one match here, hopefully not though.

Long break in the seventh game of Anna's match so I wonder whether Scheepers had picked up an injury, either way great comeback from Anna who wins the last 4 games of the first to win it 6-4.
