Apparently, according to my inbox, I just won the Highland Spring competition for tickets for a family of four to go and see the entire tie! I did enter the Highland Spring competition a couple of weeks ago.

I've got to check out if this is legit, but I'll let you all know if I'm going to be there after all!

The AEGON GB Davis Cup Captain, Leon Smith, has announced the following team to face Turkey in the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Europe/Africa Zone Group II tie from 9-11 July 2010:

* Jamie Baker

* James Ward

* Ken Skupski

* Colin Fleming

* (Reserve: Alex Ward)

Commenting on the team, Leon Smith said: "I am confident that this is a group of players which can win this tie.

"Theyve all shown good form during the grass court season, and now the focus is on getting the result against Turkey."

The captain is allowed to change up to two players no later than one hour before the official draw on Thursday 8th July.

so no surprises there then.

I'm not sure in what parallel universe Jamie B has shown 'good form during the grass court season' given that he has an 0-3 record and has only won 1 set out of 8, though I suppose taking a set off Dolgo now looks quite decent.

Hmm, yes, in respect of Jamie it's an interesting extremely relative use of the word "good".

More like "we virtually decided a little while ago that Jamie and James would be the singles players and have tried to give them as much good grass court matchplay as possible given we appear to have decided to play on grass."

Not the greatest early statement from Leon given already how much spin we get out of the LTA, particularly from Roger the Dodger.

Not that ultimately I have any real problem with the selection.

True, but Jamie himself has said he feels he is playing the best he has ever played at Wimby.

really as soon as GB 1 & 2 said no this team wrote itself (esp with Evo being cut adrift)

1st bit - not really saying much though, is it!

2nd bit - yes, I agree, it did, and it does look like the best team available under the circumstances.

Expected team and should be good enough to win the tie unless a disasterous occurence, or the Turks number two has been pretending to be a rubbish player for the rest of his career.

In fact, given the way Ward played at Eastbourne, he could well beat Ilhan anyway and thus remove any kind of doubt about the match.

Bit surprised to see Alex Ward as the reserve. Surely it would make more sense to pick someone who is actually playing on grass at the moment rather than leaving as quickly as possible to play on hard courts in Norway.

Ward had a pretty good Nottinghm tho so it does fit with who showed in the grass court season. Plus you can't blame someone for going to a 15K over a 10K

Ward's got a good record vs Ilhan as well.

will have to see how the various players copes with the pressure of a Dc tie, esp a home one.

i worry about the atmosphere at Eastbourne, will they bus in a load of students to help out?

I thought that ever since Glasgow DC, the LTA personally shipped in those University of Stirling students at no cost.

i hope you are joking LT, if the LTA paid for a bunch of students to travel from Glasgow to Eastbourne it would be ridiculous.

At best maybe they could offer a discounted block booking ticket or something.
