Weeks 21 & 22: French Open (Roland-Garros) - red clay

No obvious place to put this link to a feature in today's London Evening Standard, so I thought I might as well kick off the RG main draw thread a few days early, given that the article rightly lauds the achievement of Bally, AK & KOB of being there by right. biggrin Apologies if I was being a little presumptuous...

Assuming the instant draw is correct (if it's not, it wouldn't be the first time the French have GEMmed it all up ...)

L128: Elena Baltacha WR 63 v (8) Agnieszka Radwanska (POL) WR 8
L128: Anne Keothavong WR 115 v (14) Flavia Pennetta (ITA) WR 15
L128 Katie O'Brien WR 124 v Jill Craybas (USA) WR 92

Nice draw for Katie ... terrible for Elena & Anne. cry.gif

Head to heads - mainly ancient history:

Elena 0-1 v Radwanska - lost 1 & 2 in Dubai in 2008

Anne 1-1 v Pennetta - won 4-1 2-4 4-2 5-4(2) Welwyn 25K 2000. lost 2 & 0 Fukuoka 50K 2002

Katie 1-0 v Craybas - won 7-6(4) 2-6 6-2 Eastbourne Q 2007

Although very tough for Anne and Elena, Katie could hardly have picked a better opponent. Jill Craybas has done very well to stay in the top 100 so long as a late developer (she is now 35) but is showing all the signs of coming to the end of her career. She has played 6 matches on clay this year, and has only once extended a set. Katie has beaten her before, and really should fancy her chances of repeating the feat.

maybe katie has a reasonable shot, if shes at her best.
i doubt we'll see the others come through.
but surely not a 60-60 for anne this year, though.

Anne is third on court 1 tomorrow - one of the televised courts, so could well be shown via BBC Red Button (not Freeview) and the BBC website

Bookies odds

Anne 6.20 - 1.06
Bally 6.50 - 1.05
Katie 1.90 - 1.71

Katie should win hers IMO.

I think Anne has a chance. Pennetta won Marbella MM event but her last few weeks have been poor. If Anne serves well and plays well, she has a shot. Glad we get to see her.
