*groan* I had Roddick AND Ferrer... but it's certainly making it interesting, having the lower ranked players cause this wealth of unexpected upsets.
EDIT: Speaking of which, Olek and Almagro are underway on Court 7. It's 4-3 to Almagro with Almagro serving, so that means he's already got a break. If Olek wins here I'll be shooting up the table, but as I said earlier, picking him to get through this match as well as defeating Gonzo was some risky pick on my part.

How do you think Olek will make the transition to grass?
Tough to say. Grass is not the forte of the Ukrainians. They have a mixture of clay courts and indoor hard courts out there, so their players are split as specialists - many, Olek included, seem to heavily favour the clay and do very well on the Challenger Tour at clay court tourneys (and make considerable efforts to enrol themselves in clay court events whenever possible) - however those Ukrainians aiming to push on in the rankings make real efforts to play as much hard courts as possible and switch their focus to that surface (such as Sergiy Stakhovsky, Illya Marchenko, and Sergei Bubka Jr). By breaking out onto the World Series tour during the clay court season, Olek has given himself the best possible chance of doing well here.
On grass? Last year, the Ukrainians' record on grass was not great, tbh, and outside of the grass court season (i.e. Queens and Wimbledon with an exo in between possibly) I've never seen them willingly choose to play grass court tournaments. However, many of them are very keen to push on and progress, which presumably includes improving on grass. Marchenko has stated one of his current aims as getting into the Slams and putting together good runs, and he and the others will be very keen to do well at Wimbledon. Olek, in comparison to his performances on clay, might do worse on grass - if you want me to guess, I say he'll go one round less than he does here in Roland Garros.
But he's young, and up and coming... I get the sense of Olek, in the long run, that he has a very adaptable and versatile game, and that in future he can definitely master grass. Just maybe not this year! He's not where he needs to be right now to make a big run on the green stuff - his experience and strength is still with mainly clay courts, he hasn't learnt yet to make the transition to grass. Wait till next year though and he could put something decent together at Wimbledon.

He also had two runs to the finals of Challengers on clay but was not the eventual champion - this was at Tanger and Marrakech. In doubles all of his titles and runners up trophies have been on clay. Since 2008, Olek has been playing far more hard courts, with a few finalist runs but no titles so far. He has never played on grass since turning pro.
As a junior, Olek split his time much more evenly between clay and hard courts, doing pretty well on both, and only played on grass in singles at the Roehamption Junior event and Junior Wimbledon in 2006. Both tourneys he lost in the first round against Jesse Levine. He didn't play any more Junior Wimbledon & Roehampton after 2006, because he turned pro that year, and as a pro has never chosen to play a grass event. That said I expect him to be at Wimbledon, since he is really looking now to break into the main Tour and will be wanting to improve and gain experience on the other surfaces, plus Wimbledon will be too big an opportunity for Olek to think about passing up, given where he is in the rankings and his plans to progress.

That's another factor of course. If he gets a really tough draw at Wimbledon he might just go out in the first round. But if he gets a decent draw, he could definitely make it to at least round 2. I don't think he would go any further than round 3 at Wimbledon at the most - unless he's very lucky and gets withdrawals or retirements.
Meanwhile, I may be in for a big fall here at RG Pick'em, as Almagro is now 6-3 6-3 up. Damn. Well, picking Olek to get to the fourth was always a big risk on my part - I was just being highly ambitious and hoping it would pay off in my pick'em... plus I thought if he defeats Gonzo he has a shot at pulling it out of the bag against Almgaro.

Oh heck... Ferrer's now out too, and Verdasco's a set down against Kohlschreiber. It's going to be one of those tournaments, isn't it?
EDIT: Belluci's also taken the first set off Ljubicic. Only Almagro's match is going to plan - figures, seeing as his is the only match where I need an upset to occur and Olek to come through!

About two or three hours ago the BBC comentators were saying during Djokovic's match that Djokovic had recorded a new karaoke for this year's RG - this time he and Viktor Troicki did one together, and they had decided to sing Shakira's "Gypsy".
As soon as they said that, I thought instantly "I'd stake my life savings that Nole's going to be Shakira and he'll wear the blonde wig that Soderling wore the other day to sing 'Gimme a man after midnight' "... Lo and behold, the vid has just appeared on the atp homepage, and Nole's wearing that damn wig and mocking up Shakira whilst Troicki plays Rafa. Ah, Mr Djokovic, I know thee too well.
Inspired, though, utterly inspired. I bet a large section of Rafa fans will get their knickers in a twist and slam it and Djokovic, but personally (and Rafa is one of my faves) I'm not in the least offended, in fact quite the opposite. *shakes head* When that whole song from Shakira came out I must admit it prompted a mental smile - it was always obvious that she hung around Rafa's matches for a reason - and it was hard not to laugh at the actual video - wish fulfillment anyone ?! So Djokovic pointing it out in a parody is hardly cause to hop up and down, is it. I think you've got to be able to laugh at that, or you're taking Shakira/Rafa too seriously.
In other news... curses, Olek went down in straight to Almagro!

Got my Net connection back, saw 'bash had won and was really happy for a few seconds until I saw Pics (one of my semi-finalists) had gone out to Melzer, which does far more harm than any good that Duckboy going out could do. I didn't even imagine Pics losing to Melzer was an outside possibility, yet he seems to have muppeted out in straights, the stupid PEM.
Results are now up to date anyway.

Speaking of stupid PEMs... Dammit, Almagro, you were supposed to fold in straights against Olek... darn PEMs never doing what you need them to. *grumble*
Verdasco's now in a fifth set against Kolhschreiber, and I think he's one of my semifinalists, so my whole Pick'em's gone to pot today if Verdasco loses as well. I've already lost Roddick, Ferrer, and Olek, if Verdasco goes as well I am in serious trouble.
