I know how you feel. In the main, I tend to pick safe, i.e. the obvious, sensible choice, where there is one. I get frustrated with myself if I do that all the time though because tennis is one of those sports where anything can happen and the potential for it going against the favourite is always there... Of course when I then go and make a few risky picks it never does seem to go my way, and then of course where I've made safe picks there's an upset!!!

Yes, Gimeno-Traver over Cilic was my upset pick which unfortunately wasn't quite as successful as yours cry.gif

Oh, shame! And Gimeno-Traver has shown in the past that he can cause upsets and play to a pretty high level at his best. On clay as well, he's a pretty reasonable punt! There are far more outrageous punts out there. Unlucky for you!

2010 ROLAND GARROS BOTB - DAY 5 'SYNDICATED' REPORT

Better late than never, hopefully!

Only 6 matches managed to finish on Thursday. Wins for Baggy 82%, Duckboy 88% & Isner 92% were predicted by the vast majority of us and Gabashvili's win gave a lift to the 2% who picked him but was not an upset because he was playing 0% pick Zemlja.

Muzza 77% beating Chela had a particularly big effect on the team KO, with Dammitaires losing their lead in their L16 match and AM.com & JM.org gaining the lead in theirs.

The big shock of the day though was Foggy 1% upsetting le Monf 98% 9-7 in the 5th in one of the unfinished matches from Wednesday. That did not have nearly as much immediate effect as the Muzza win, but gives a big boost to the 35% who picked Stani to reach R4 unless Fabio can recover in time from his second 5 set match in a row to beat him.

Detailed results (already updated with lots of day 6 results as well, obviously) can be found at http://www.freewebs.com/britishtennis/competitions.html and from now on they will be updated regularly each day, with 'headlines', the odd rant (when I just can't stop myself!) and the odd 'quote of the day' appearing on http://twitter.com/botb1 as well.

TEAMS

Once again, the top three in the teams league finished the day where they started it, with world no. 2 team BritishTennis.net still in 1st place ahead of MTF & JM.org.

The big winners, mainly as a result of the Murray win, were new R2 leaders BBC 606, up 5 to 4th, AM.com, up 3 to 6th, and the Ducklings, up 3 to 11th. The big fallers were T4Y, down 4 to 8th, the Dammitaires, down 6 to 13th, and GBTG, down 2 to 14th, just 0.1 points ahead of last-placed the Daily Forehand.

INDIVIDUALS

Silver (BT) & British_is_best (BT) retained their joint lead on 75/100 and increased it to 2 points, with R1 winner Josh (BT), up 1 to 3rd, completing a Team BT monopoly of the podium places.

They got 4/6 results correct on Thursday, as did everyone else who is now in the top 10 - emf123 (IN), Snoo Foo (MT), Björki (MT) & Raven (AM), all up 1 to 4=, Daniel/Belgarath1981 (RF) & Miles (TA), both up 2 to 8=, and oneminutetomidknight (BT), Claire Thompson (JM), wycombe7 (TA), mataeo1983 (TA) & waylandboy-tw (TA), all up 4 to 10=.

ON THE RISE

Although about 200 entrants got at least 4/6 correct on Thursday, just 4 entrants equal top scored with 5/6.

They were Scruffybearmac (AM), up 76 to 54=, Cain Bradley (BB), up 94 to 90=, and Alien (CC) & Orlik (AR), both up 86 to 179=.

DODGY DROPPERS

rdwalshv (IN), down 106 to 334=, managed to draw a complete blank on day 5, but by far the biggest faller was one of those who got just 1/6 - irenerer (RF), down 171 to 301=. Three of those who got 3/6 correct also fell 130 places or more - Portsey (BT), down 130 to 182=, David Thompson (AM), down 134 to 219th, and kinley (BT), down 132 to 220=.

FRIDAY

The most important of the remaining R2 matches were flagged in the day 4 report, so I won't mention them again.

In the top half of R3, the 65% of us who picked le Monf and the 65% of us who picked Gulbis not to muppet out early desperately need Foggy 0% and/or Mayer 0% to beat Stani 35% and ili 34% respectively to avoid a substantial drop. Gulp!

Those who picked Dammit to go deep could do with Baggy 17% extending his winning H2H v Muzza 66% too, and the 47% who picked Robredo to beat Youzhny in R3 had better hope Troicki 1% saves their bacon against Youzhny 49%.

The results of Sod 85% v Montañés 15% and particularly Berdbrain 69% v Isner 29% could shake the table up quite a bit too, with only Tsonga 88% v de Bakker 4% and Fed 99% v Reister 0% unlikely to cause significant short-term shifts in the table.

TEAM KO

L16 scores at the end of Thursday, based on average scores in RG R2:

(1) BritishTennis.net 23.19 lead (16) The Daily Forehand 22.00
(8) Rusedski.co.uk 22.82 lead (9) RichardGasquet.net 21.54
(12) Tennisopolis.com 23.07 lead (5) TalkAboutTennis 23.05 - just 0.02 pts in it!
(4) Other Boards 23.65 lead (13) Centre Court Forum 23.57 - just 0.08!
(3) JamieMurray.org 23.50 lead (14) GBTennisGirls.com 21.78
(11) BBC 606 boards 24.33 lead (6) Tennis4you.com 22.80
(10) AndyMurray.com 23.38 lead (7) RogerFederer.com 23.18 - still very close!
(15) AndyRoddick.com 23.60 lead (2) MensTennisForums 23.37

At the time of writing though, things have evolved quite a bit since these overnight scores.

Oh no! What happened?! Why have I fallen so far down the table?! Olek's win took me to 30th earlier today!

It was the Stani and Isner results. However, Cilic may save your day yet.

LT, the Cilic & Soderling results haven't been added yet, and as you're one of approx 100 people who picked them both, you'll be shooting back up the table soon.

Ah, Cilic and Sod, so they will be fighting to fill that quarter final spot that I had set aside for the long departed Mr Gulbis.

Looks like Cilic will be the damage limitators choice here  hmm.gif

2010 ROLAND GARROS BOTB - DAY 6 'SYNDICATED' REPORT

R2 was finally completed on Friday and all but one of the top half R3 matches finished as well.

Most of the remaining R2 matches were won by the overwhelming favourites, but 11 entrants had cause for celebration when 3% pick Dolgopolov made Gonzo squawk. The 35% of us who picked Chardy or Becker to reach R3 instead of Hewitt were given hope of a bit of damage limitation by Istomin for a while until he eventually went down to the Aussie in 5 sets, but 1% pick Ginepri saved lots of us who picked Querrey from further pain when he took out 19% pick Starace.

Another GEM loss which really started to bite in R3 was le Monf's. After winning five set matches in each of the first two rounds, Foggy had nothing left in the tank against 35% pick Stani. Gulbis pickers suffered a similar fate when Leo Mayer was unable to stop the run of 34% pick ili, though he did push him close. Meanwhile, two favourites whose wins were nevertheless missed out on by more than 30% were Muzza 66% and Berdbrain 69%. However, perhaps the most crucial match of the day, Youzhny 49% v Troicki 1% (where 47% went for Robredo) was suspended with the Russian 2 sets to 1 up and a break up in the 4th.

Detailed results can be found at http://www.freewebs.com/britishtennis/competitions.html and from now on they will be updated regularly each day, with 'headlines', the odd rant (when I just can't stop myself!) and the odd 'quote of the day' appearing on http://twitter.com/botb1 as well.

TEAMS

Despite losing their stranglehold on the individual podium places, world no. 2 ("WR 2") team BritishTennis.net managed to hold onto 1st place for yet another day and even managed to increase their lead to a full point.

The Muzza v Dammit match in R1 has turned into a 6-pointer for the 80% of us who predicted that their winner would survive to at least R4, and the effects of that can be seen in the fact that AM.com WR 5 have moved up another 4 places to 2nd, while the Dammitaires WR 10 have now completed their slide to last place, with the lowest average in R2 and by far the lowest average in R3 so far.

Rusedski.co.uk WR 4 are another predominantly British team on their way up, leaping 6 places to 3rd on Friday, while T4Y WR 12, up 4 to 4th, lead R3 so far and are the third and last team to have moved up more than one place on day 6.

Going the opposite way, R1 winners MTF WR 8 fell 3 to 5th, R2 winners BBC 606 WR 7 fell 1 to 6th, JM.org WR 9 fell 4 to 7th despite little brother's win, defending champions the Feddies WR 1 fell 1 to 8th and TAT WR 3, down 5 to 9th, fell the most of all.

INDIVIDUALS

It was virtually all change in the top 10 on Friday, particularly towards the end of the day, with ili's win lifting emf123 (IN) up 3 to 1st on tiebreak from one of the day's equal top scorers (45/49), Darius (IN), who rose 38 to 2nd.

A point behind, world no. 22 (and one of 21 entrants who equal top scored in R2 with 25/32 correct) Akhenaten (BT) moved up 12 to 3rd, maintaining a reduced BT presence in the top three. He is joined in the top 5 by team-mate DavidC (BT), up 20 to 5th, while Björki (MT), sandwiched between them in 4th, is the only entrant outside the bottom two to have finished the day where she started.

Two more of Friday's equal top scorers soared into the top 10 - The Man From Onken (IN), up 95 to 7th, and nelslus (TA), up 122 to 8th. The new top 10 is completed by 40-42/45 scorers FERNET (MT), up 27 to 6th, Claire Thompson (JM), up 1 to 9=, and former US Open BOTB winner amalyn (MT), up 29 to 9=.

Thursday's joint leaders both dropped out of the top 10 - 36/45 on Friday saw British_is_Best (BT) fall 17 to 18th and Silver (BT) fell 27 to 28= after getting 35/45.

ON THE RISE

As mentioned above, 3 of the top 10 got 36 points out of 45 on Friday, but 3 more entrants managed that as well - Manaus (AM), up 135 to 16th, Claire Bear (AM), up 156 to 27th, and riser of the day T. x (CC), up 189 to 46th.

Further down the table, other entrants who rose 130+ places were Origmarm (TW), up 149 to 86th, Tennis4you (TY), up 135 to 124=,
Lizzim (AM), up 160 to 126th, Russiafan (CC), up 142 to 127th, and --cj-- (TA) & Marek0526 (IN), both up 144 to 142=.

DODGY DROPPERS

The lowest scorer of the day with just 21/45 was Tammy (DF), who stays in 2nd last 10 points behind those above her but 6 points clear of lanterne rouge Petzschner's Left Thumb (IN), who after getting 22 points on day 6 is level with Amélie the GEM bot but now way ahead of the gorillas.

The other entrants who scored 25/45 or less on Friday were Yorkie (AM), down 32 to 345th after getting 23, Gaël (RG), down 55 to 336th after getting 24, and Gabriel (RG), down 17 to 342nd after getting 25. Those entrants all started the day close to the bottom though, so the biggest fallers came from among the half dozen or so who got 26/45 on day 6, with faller of the day tarnais (RG), down 247 to 287th, Ivanatis (MT), down 199 to 301=, AllyB (JM), down 175 to 305th, and La Cereza (IN), down 164 to 315th, all plummeting more than 150 places.

Further up the table, the same fate also befell janeInScotland (JM), down 172 to 197th, Suliso (TA), down 177 to 215th, ManOfJelly (BB), down 152 to 216th, rondun (JM), down 153 to 217=, BeauJarkko (TA), down 165 to 226=, juliette (RG), down 201 to 226=, Craven91 (BT), down 164 to 228th, and trisco (CC), down 164 to 266th, despite them all scoring at least 29 points for the day.

Gabashvili is about to serve for the match against Rodduck!!!! omg.gif

6-4 6-4 5-2....

15-0, Rodduck sends it wide.
30-0, winner down the line from Gabashvili
40-0, Rodduck puts it into the net.... 3 match points!

WINNER FROM GABASHVILI! HE DOES IT! winner.gif

Interestingly, Gabashvili is another player who's been having good success on the Challenger Tour this past 12 months.

Bash puts out Duck - shame, I was hoping to make up a few points.

Pics down a set and 2 breaks against Melzer - wouldn't mind seeing Pics go out , even though I do actually have him to win this match, since it'll damage others more than me :)
