RE: Week 18 Challenger (E30k) - San Remo (Italy)

Rubbish draw, but since it's a Challenger, a well-deserved 3 points for making it through qualifying smile.gif

L32: Dan Smethurst WR 344 lost to (3) Albert Ramos-Vinolas ESP WR 145 by 4-6 6-3 6-2 cry.gif

Not a bad effort against a Spaniard in the top 150 on clay ...

No, that's fairly promising and at least he has his 3 points

i think smethurst is doing a fantastic job at the moment.

he has been having a steady rankings rise and now seems to be proving that he is able to mix it up on the chalenger tour.

i hope that he plays the next italian challenger and continues to progress up the rankings.

Wimbledon WC im thinking - too lenient do you think? he's outside top 250 but only 19...very inexperienced too

With Draper and the LTA under fire, my fear is that they will take no chances they don't have to.  If they don't give WC's away, then players cannot lose in the 1st round.  Preventing more criticism may affect their decision making.

That would be so short-sighted though, even from a PR point of view. The worst thing of all is to get no GB men through to R2 apart from Andy and past experience (not to mention logic) suggests that the best way to get someone through to R2 is to give WCs to any Brits who could conceivably win a R1 match given a decent draw, for the obvious reason that this maximises the chance of at least one of them drawing a Berlocq or a Pashanski ...

I would hope so Steven but I'd lay a sportmans bet with you that the scenario is closer to what I suggested. Out of the 8 WC's availible to British Men, I wager this year will only see 3 awarded, 4 tops, I certainly cannot see more than that being given out (fingers crossed mind!)

At last a bit of good news to relieve the gloom on the men's side today:

L16:  (2) Jamie Delgado & Sadik Kadir (AUS) defeated Tobias Kamke & Dominik Meffert (GER/GER) by 7-6(4) 6-1 smile

QF:  (2) Jamie Delgado & Sadik Kadir (AUS) vs Carlos Berlocq & Sebastián Decoud (ARG/ARG) pray.gif

That's a bet you'd win too easily, sadly.

**** the LTA and Draper and their spin and PR, how about just do the right thing eh ?

Anyway, Dan S is a younger player making real progress which is the other thing the LTA mentioned they would use for Wimbledon WC recommendations apart from being in the top 250.  He is deserving of a chance here while others around his age have not come through as much lately or indeed fallen back.

They should bve prepared to stretch this as far is is reasonable to give GB players an opportunity at their home Grand Slam ( and as suggested you can draw a grass numpty smile  )
