RE: Week 18- WTA Premier ($2 million) - Rome, Italy, Red Clay.

Arn should have beaten Schnyder last week, so not a total shock.

Have to remember Bally has only played about 3 clay events outside the French in the past 3 years, she's never been good on it and only made final round in Paris cos her draw was a gift.

Problem with being ranked in the top 75 is that u actually have to play on the stuff.

Expect a tough few weeks, any points at all that count in her 16 best should be considered a bonus.

She should of won tho, missed a point for *5-2

Ah pity for Elena, especially being so close and with the start she made   cry

However, being her first match of the year on clay, which as Paul indicates is far from her favourite domian, it probably is indeed not an absolutely huge shock though I certainly still thought she would win that match.

Hopefully these 3 sets have at least got her going a bit on the dirt and she can  get something out of the clay season, particularly from the French Open.

The WC Anne is playing against at the moment has lost her last 14 sets in a mix of 10Ks and 25Ks, so seems a bit of a Moroni(c) choice for a WC by the Italian federation.

I agree with Paul that Bally's defeat is no shock, and anything she gains pointswise out of the clay court season is a bonus. Even with her improved movement she is still very vulnerable on this surface, and though Arn is an inconsistent player she is highly capable on clay (she has even won a Tour event in Estoril back in 2007) and will have seen this draw as a great opportunity.

Anne is second on, not before 1pm BST tomorrow

0-6 (just 7 points won)

Sprem is the bookies favourite understandably, but I expected Anne to be competitive. Hope there is nothing physically wrong
