Week 17 - ITF ($50K) - Gifu, Japan - Hard

All of the GB girls drew seeds unfortunately. Naomi & Jade vs locals, and Mel against Laura's conqueror in the AO Juniors final.

(1)Yurika Sema (JPN) v Naomi Broady (GBR)
Ganna Piven (UKR) v Sheng-Nan Sun (CHN)

So-Jung Kim (KOR) v (wc)Yuko Adachi (JPN)
(6)Tomoko Yonemura (JPN) v Jade Curtis (GBR)

(8)Karolina Pliskova (CZE) v Melanie South (GBR)
Yi-Fan Xu (CHN) v Q

Also we have a great tournament name: The Kangaroo Cup

Ouch, poor Mel. If she beats Pliskova, her reward is likely to be the player who trounced her at Changwon... :(

From Mel's tweet it sounds like some/all of the play today was rained off.

L32: Naomi Broady WR 271 lost to (1) Yurika Sema (JPN) WR 157 by 6-7(7) 6-3 6-4 cry.gif
L32: Jade Curtis WR 338 lost to (6) Tomoko Yonemura (JPN) WR 186 by 1 & 2 cry.gif
L32: Mel South WR 240 lost to (8) Karolina Pliskova (CZE) WR 231 by 5-7 7-5 6-0 cry.gif

A good fight by Naomi, otherwise pretty dire cry.gif but they were very unlucky to all draw seeds when on average 2 of them should have avoided seeds in R1.

As expected I'm afraid. Naomi our best shot got the worst draw and was closest to winning. Jade realistically had no chance on current form and Mel needed her opponent to be off colour to gain the victory.

Hopefully Naomi will sustain this form and with better draws will start picking up the points in bucket loads.

Naturally, Pliskova went on to win the tournament...Mel got as many games as the finalist, noone else got close.

Mel got a good draw the previous week, a bad draw last week, but has a decent draw this week so hopefully can get a few wins this week.
