Boys: Open International Juniors de Beaulieu sur Mer, France - Grade 1 (Week 16)

Its a critical week for many of our boys trying to make Roland Garros. Oliver Golding and George Morgan should have enough points for the main draw, whilst Jack Carpenter (and Tom Allen, playing in Spain) should have enough for qualifying, but needs at least a QF to be in with a chance of a main draw entry. The rest need strong weeks even to have a chance of making qualifying.

Jack and Ollie have both been hammerred by last week's winner Carlos Boluda-Purkiss in the Grade 2s. This week George draws the short straw, playing him in round 2 unless Laurent Lokoli causes an upset.

George gained respectability at least compared with Jack and Ollie's hammerings by Carlos, and Andrew continued the promise shown last week and gained another excellent victory. He is next up against the player who beat him in the Junior Davis Cup semi. Jack plays another of the French squad, who recently won the Copa Gerdau grade A, whilst Ashley takes on the Italian who beat him in Cap D'Ail

R2

(13) Mathias Wunner (GER) d. Tom Farquharson (GBR) 6-1 6-0

Jack gains a fine win to keep him in the hunt for a Roland Garros main draw place, whilst Ashley avenges his earlier defeat. Jack needs to beat the top seed tomorrow to have a good chance of direct entry. If successful he will have an unusual double over the two Copa Gerdau finalists.

R3

(12) Jack Carpenter (GBR) d. (7) Mathias Bourgue (FRA) 6-3 6-3
(11) Mick Lescure (FRA) d. Andrew Bettles (GBR) 7-6(4) 6-3
(14) Ashley Hewitt (GBR) d. Marco Cecchinato (ITA) 6-2 6-4

QF

(1) Jiri Vesely (CZE) v (12) Jack Carpenter (GBR)
(11) Mick Lescure (FRA) v (14) Ashley Hewitt (GBR)

(1) Jiri Vesely (CZE) d. (12) Jack Carpenter (GBR) 6-0 6-2
(14) Ashley Hewitt (GBR) d. (11) Mick Lescure (FRA) 7-6(4) 6-4

SF

Carlos Boluda-Purkiss (ESP) d. (14) Ashley Hewitt (GBR) 6-4 6-4

Two good performances by Ashley, who got more games off CBP than anyone else has managed, and should have done enough to be in Roland Garros qualifying.
