RE: Week 16 - ITF ($50K) - Dothan, AL, USA - clay

Awesome news.

What does this mean for next week's qualifying? Does she automatically get a special exemption, is it at the organisers discretion, or does that not apply unless she makes the final?

I'm pretty sure she would need to reach the final. There is an outside chance she might make the main draw cutoff as she is only a couple of places away from it at the moment. Another option is to withdraw and save the additional tournament with regards to the maximum of 12 for the year.

Very impressive today because in that heat it would have been very easy to have dropped the match very quickly after losing the first set. The other matches have certainly followed that trend. Very encouraging to see Laura now finish her matches stronger than when she starts them.

The semi will much be much tougher still though against Gallovits.

Reaching the semis here now takes Laura to 174 ranking points.

That has a good chance of putting her into the top 270 in the world rankings and in between Anna Smith and Naomi Broady who in next Monday's world rankings will be on 176 and 172 points respectively.

So, as things stand, now GB no 7 and 2 points away from the GB no 6.

Mel, in 5th place, is safe for now ( just ! ) even if Laura goes on and wins the title.

Yes, I agree - up above Naomi B and WR 270.

In addition, she is now the 4th highest GB WTA points scorer this year behind Elena, Anne & Katie, having sneaked ahead of Cav and Heather with tonight's win.

Gallovits has a 100% record against Brits, but she's only played one - beating Anne 2 & 2 way back in 2001.

Isn't she behind Anna too?

I do think it's great to see Anna,  Laura and Naomi B jostling around 270th place having moved up in 2010 from 434th, 403rd and 298th place respectively, with behind them Heather moving up over 200 places to the 330s.

As SMC says, Anna having started the year behind Laura, suggests that she must have collected a few more points than Laura this year.

Yes she is ashamed- I must give up posting quick stats when I'm trying to do half a dozen other things at the same time! no

Local news is on the live stream at the moment - there has been a report from the tournament and interviews with some of the winners every other night, so a chance there may be something on Laura tonight.

Edit: Well, during about 20 seconds of reporting on the match, the sports reporter managed to call her Robinson, Robeson and Robeinson! Ken Thomas has some competition.

Yes, I think style seems to come slightly ahead of correct detail in many American media reports  hmm.gif

Well, they certainly have *a* style. Also, a threat of tornadoes tomorrow just to make things a little more interesting.

How they fail to grasp Robson is beyond me. I do hope the likes of Lertcheewakarn are not easily offended or they may resort to a total boycott of the US events.

Ken Thomas was calling Laura's surname Robinson last year as well during US open qualifying until someone emailed in to correct him.
