1 point is indeed scant reward. Lets hope she gets at least one MD win

Good stuff from Emily  smile     Main draw now gives her a great chance of converting her one point into 9.  I do really hope she takes it and I expect she will.

L32: (8) Mel South WR 235 v (Q) Na Ri Kim (KOR) WR 502

In play, Mel has lost the 1st set on a tiebreak cry.gif, now 6-7 0-1 no idea who's serving.

L32: (Q) Emily Webley-Smith WR 437 v (Q) Min-Hwa Yu (KOR) WR 873

Follows the Fujiwara match (currently 1-2 in the 1st set) or may start earlier if it is moved to another court.

Emily tweets:

"Lost 1 and 4 to the korean. got looped and hacked off the court. not happy."

Terrible results though, both losing to players ranked hundreds of places lower cry.gif

Indeed, a disaster week for the top GB girls to far - nos 1, 2, 4 & 5 in action seeded 1, 4, 2 & 8 and three of them have gone out in R1, winning 2-4 matches lessthan their seedings would have led you to expect. ashamed

We have managed 10 singles last 16ers, 6 men and 4 women.  The first three of these play, Bally, Lisa and Slabba, have reached their quarter finals, though I've just seen that Josh has had a disappointingly big defeat.  Heather ( most particularly ), Naomi B and Chris have also had honourable defeats in earlier rounds.

Some very ( very ) bad losses this week yes ( tell me about it ! ) from some of our top ranked players, but I'd say rather better overall than a few weeks, particularly for the men and I don't remember for quite a time as many as nine players still competing going into a Thursday.

Some of our top ranked players may not to be doing the business for whatever reasons, but in victory and defeat there is encouragement coming through, certainly in the women.

A week to forget for many of our top ranked players ( most of the relevant ones here have been off form for some time ) but not so much for British tennis as a whole.

On the wider front, putting my pessimist hat back on, it does concern me that so many of our players, younger and more experienced seem to be in a trough re their form just now with just a few real shining lights that flicker amidst some of the general gloom.

Some of the junior results have been pretty bad this week too.   Oh gawd, I started this off as a more positive it's not too bad really  hmm.gif

Most of the shining lights at the moment are also notably not exactly coming through the "British Tennis" ranks.

True, as you say the good bits are being overshadowed by the losses being so bad and affecting high profile players. It's been a lot better than most of the last few weeks were - remember Sean Thornley was the only GB male player to get a ranking point in the previous 2 weeks and the Jersey Challenger was not exactly fruitful.

Sadly, this is completely normal - very few of our players ever manage to put together more than one or two 2-3 week periods of good form in a year, which is why we have so few players who can consistently play at Challenger level+.

Maybe it's true the world over - it's certainly true of most of the GEMs in the top 100, who somehow get away with it!) and if anything, it's been a bit better this year, especially on the women's side.
