Solid win for Lisa and on paper the second round looks easier. Albeit her opponent is only 17 and clearly underranked.

Yes, certainly would be looking to Lisa to reach at least the quarter finals now, and then hopefully further  ( seeded for semis ).

If she can gather some good points here this week and again next week and move her ranking into the top 500, hopefully she will actually leave Kazakhstan with some fond memories  smile

Lisa: "i won my 1st 2 rounds 5 and 3 in both, playing good tennis, another rusky up tomo,i wish i had hot water and decent internet!!!" - still, that suggests she has now found food!

L16: (4) Lisa Whybourn WR 522 beat (Q) Nadya Kolb (UKR) UNR smile.gif

QF: (4) Lisa Whybourn WR 522 v (8) Maria Zharkova (RUS) WR 727

Lisa is now up to 58 points with nothing to defend until September and 60 points ,ight just be enough to edge into the top 500.

This is Zharkova's first QF (i.e. first back to back wins) since last July!

Much more convincing today smile.gif

QF: (4) Lisa Whybourn WR 522 beat (8) Maria Zharkova (RUS) WR 727 by 2 & 3 smile.gif

SF: (4) Lisa Whybourn WR 522 v (1) Manana Shapakidze (GEO) WR 453

So you could say she plays Manana mañana ... the Georgian beat Anna Smith in 3 sets in Antalya in 2007 but got thrashed 0 & 1 by Amanda Carreras in the same city last year.

SF: Manana SHAPAKIDZE (GEO) (1) defeated Lisa WHYBOURN (GBR) (4) 4-6 7-5 6-0  cry

If it's any consolation, Lisa is the first player this week to take a set off Shapakidze.

Looks like Lisa just ran out of steam (a bit like me - that's twice in a row you've posted a result before me now LOL smile.gif), but nevertheless a good week.

Decent effort by Lisa before it seems to have ran away from her rather in the final set.

Still the 6 points from here should have her verging on the top 500 with hopefully more to come next week.

Also, with a few days off competing now, she can get to know more about Astana and / or Almaty.  Indeed, work out where her food supplies are going to come from in Almaty smile

... then more comedy gold from Lisa:

"just found the best steak house in kazakstan hands down probably in the whole wide world why...u ask urself did u not eaty there all week instead of starving!!!off to almaty tomorrow...hotel is local kgb apparently..hmm"
