Week 14 - ATP 250 ($442,500) - US Mens Clay Court Championship, Houston US - Clay

When James Ward tweated he was setting off to America, he meant for here!  Quite a good call IMO.

James is up on live scores http://www.protennislive.com/frameset.asp?year=&wkno=14=en&tabno=2&eventid=M020 on serve in the 1st set at 2-2* - two love holds for Vemic, just one point lost on serve by James.

Oh dear, 2-4* and James still hasn't managed to win a point on Vemic's serve.

... but as I write that, he wins the first point in the next game.

1st set to Vemic 6-3 - Vemic has got 81% 1st serves in and has won 20/21 points on serve (you wouldn't think this was clay, would you?!), James has got 53% 1st serves in and won 14/19 points on serve.

Just when it was beginning to look like James was never going to make any inroads into Vemic's serve, he's gone 4-1* up in the 2nd set, despite Vemic serving at 86% in this set to 39% for Ward!

Done it!

3-6 7-6(7) 6-4 smile.gif

Vemic is only ranked in the 800s at the moment but was in the top 150 back in 2008 and is working his way back from injury.

Decent opening win there from Ward. Vemic spends most of his time playing Doubles now by the looks of it but certainly is better than a ranking of 812!

QR1: James Ward WR 252 beat Dusan Vemic (SRB) WR 812 by 3-6, 7-6(7), 6-4 smile

QR2: James Ward WR 252 v (q5) Ryan Sweeting (USA) WR 159

Sweeting is 3-0 v Brits, beating Bloomers and Baker (twice) without losing a set.

Ah yes, you're right, he isn't coming back from injury, he's just doing a  Flemski, i.e. entering singles qualifying at random.
