Perhaps. Let's just say I'm surprised in the extreme but not in the least bit disappointed.

I think we could have our first shock upset of the tournament already. Arnaud Clement just lost the first set of his first round qualies match, his opponent just under 300 ranking places below him!

Didn't you mean to put surprised and disappointed the other way round?

Nope. Although admittedly that phrase does sound more common the other way round.

Ah, just realised you must have been referring to the paragraph about Clement that followed and not the lack of Brits in the Q draw then!

Sadly, the annoying GEM has worked his way back into it - 1 set all and 3 bps.

This is shaping up to be one gripping match! This is stunning. Shame the live video from the tourney doesn't start till Monday! Even though the GEM is turning it around now, his opponent isn't collapsing! In fact, as I write this, the GEM just got broken and it's now 3-2 and all back on serve! I can't believe how thrilling this one is shaping up to be. Who would've guessed it?!

Thrilling ... clay court match ... don't really belong in the same sentence. Even I've got my eye on the LS for this one though, hoping the annoying GEM chokes - it's shaping up to be quite a finale.

Btw Muzza reports on twitter that he'll be playing doubles with Hutch here.

Nice info spot, steven.

Well, I can think of a few thrilling clay courters. Nadal vs Djokovic Madrid 2009 for example.

Wel, the GEM held on... but that was in no way a resounding victory! What a battle!

For my money, that was a very worthy performance. Tremendous stuff. But I'm not referring to Clement - HE should have performed much better, dug his fingernails into that one and hung on!

Shame on me - but I can't for the life of me remember what GEM stands for and I can't work it out! Somebody please put me out of my misery and remind me.

That's right, but it now has a second meaning too, particularly after Miami - "Guaranteed Early Muppetry" smile.gif
