But philwrig did point to Hogenkamp as a possible difficult opponent in the FQR, and I suggest a look at her record in 2009 since she started playing seniors ( don't know why she seems to be have been out until now in 2010 ) would suggest it isn't really a shocker.
Her 9 tournaments ( only 9 senior tournaments on her activity so far ) were :
First 4 10Ks : QFs, Title, Title, Title
Then 5 25Ks, qualifying in each, and L16, L32, QF, L16, SF
In the last, she beat Rogowska WR 148 and also beat WRs 244 & 281 in other tournaments.
She's a pretty decent 17 yo !

I'm not hugely surprised by this loss but still very disappointed. I thought yesterdays performance was a below par one at the time. A very rusty Lisa shouldn't have caused Naomi as many problems as she did in the first round. Allbeit as I pointed out when the draw was made Hogenkamp is a talented up and coming junior whom is likely to end up with a higher career high ranking than Naomi.
After Naomi's first six tournaments of the year you now have to conclude that her performance levels in her comeback win in Mexico at the end of last year were not indicative of her future form. I suspect the additional energy she had from being so happy to be back on tour or the fast conditions were responsible for her higher performance levels that week.
Looking forward I think our expectations for Naomi's future ranking prospects should be lowered. I was looking for top 200 by the end of the year but now I would say top 250 would be a fair reflection of her current playing level.
That would be the logical conclusion assuming they are in Jersey. Is it possible either Anna or Naomi were asked if they wanted the last two wild cards and declined ? I doubt it.
Naomi got one here last year, and some better ones in the grass court season. It's entirely possible the political situation has deteriorated still further in the intervening period, I guess. Hard to think what Anna's offence might be unless she's finally decided her Fed Cup future lies with her mother's kin and is in transition to a new nationality, so I'm tempted to think she didn't ask or is saving up credit for the summer.
So in other words you have to request one in the first place in order to be awarded one later on. Ah well that may well explain the strange selection of wild cards for this tournament.
I don't know what happened at 2-0 down but Anna has won 24 out of the last 29 points to take the first set 6-2. Even more impressive given she was beaten 2 and 2 by the same girl just last week.
