RE: Week 12 - ITF ($25K) - Jersey, Great Britain Hard

Nightmare draws for most concerned.
To whom did Mel's wild card go to ?

Well, even a reallocated WC clearly still didn't go to Anna Smith  disbelief.gif

What do you mean nightmare draws? With only 2 Brits seeded, I don't see how it could have been much better or worse. Plus Igle Alpay taking on the top seed means the younger girls who actually need the ranking points won't be facing her.

I don't claim to be know much about most of the non GB players there.

But just looking at the draw and the seedings, I do see what RBBOT means.

The GB girls seem quite evenly spread.  And as for who I would suggest are our three main folk, Naomi is in with the 11st seed in her section  ( from possible 9 - 16 ),  Anna is with the no 5 seed ( from possible 1 - 8 ) and Tara is in with seeds 6 and 12.

I guess not so good for Johanna Konta if we're counting her and maybe a pity Lisa has been drawn with Naomi although as Josh suggests not clear she's really ready yet for this, so arguably I'm afraid makes Naomi's task not too bad.

Really Phil, I quite fail to see how these are nightmare draws for most concerned or even really too bad.

Yeah, a bit of a shame for Sam Vickers drawing the 3rd seed but Hume, Bastick and Alpay were unlikely to win whoever they faced so can act as sacrificial lambs in a sense. The girls who were more likely to win have been given the easier draws and Alex Walker has a great chance to build on her win over Jade last week.

When I mean nightmare draws I was specifically thinking about the players who have the best chance of success.

1. Johanna has the number 1 seed in her section
2. Anna has to play a decent junior in Kerkhove and then potentially the number 5 seed
3.Tara has to play wily old veteran and underranked Kremer
4. Naomi and Lisa have to play each other and then would have a tough FQR match against Hogenkamp (decent junior beat Rogowska at the end of last year) or the seeded player

Maybe not nightmare draws but still much tougher than I would hope for a 25k qualifying event.

When does a very tough draw become a nightmare one that is the question.

Maybe when it gets vaguely close to being really tough in comparison to what one would have reasonably expected given the seeded positions and the other players entered.

The thing is, I don't actually think the draw is even "very tough" by those criteria.

It may be quite tough opposition, there's some decent players there. I still say the draw itself has come out really pretty even for the GB players including, as I specifcally alluded to, our main hopes  eg.  Broady, Smith, Moore.

Shame that Whybourn drew Broady, but I don't think she's had enough matches back yet to be able to challenge Naomi. Hopefully Anna will be able to come through too but all 3 of the girls in her section looked pretty good in Bath.

Where did you find the draw?

ITF site. If you just construct the URL that you would get if you clicked on the drawsheet tab, were it present, then sometimes the draw is posted before the drawsheet tab becomes visible. Same goes for results and entry list tabs.

Re Mel's WC, could this have been given to Jade Curtis? Either that or she's withdrawn.

Got to feel sorry for Anna. I agree that she should've received a WC here. Instead her reward is a potential FQR match with Jurikova who beat her in the SF at Bath last week 6-2 6-2.

Our main hopes could have been drawn against any of the other 7 british players in the draw in the first round who have little or no hope. Yes looking at the seedings they aren't nightmarish but I think you have to look deeper than that.

I'm temped to say surely not, but given the original WC selections, who knows....
